i thought the same thing at first when i got my new one, i live in elgin, however i'm pretty sure it's accurate. my central unit is a 2000 watt unit, and when it's running and i have all my other stuff that's normally on it says i'm pulling anywhere between 2.3 to 2.6 kw (2000 watts for the unit, 300 to 500 for electronics, lights, etc.) plus i had talked to florence utilities on the phone and they said that as the old meters wore out, they would spin slower, showing less power usage. and yes as dark dreamer said, lot's of AC usage in the last 2 months, could be the culprit.

Temperature has also doubled in the last couple of months.

The temp hasn't been 150-160 degrees around here yet.

I agree with the tempature change running it up some, that is understandable. But, I've been here for years in heat like this and never had a bill a third of this.

Even in the extreme cold January we had. I ran extra electric heaters to keep pipes from freezing the bill wasn't half this much. Maybe its just me but, something don't seem right and I don't believe the theory that the old ones was wore out because mine was replaced 3 years ago with a brand new one.

I don't mean to sound complaining I'm just trying to figure out over an average of 3 years. The last two bills has doubled and one nearly tripled since the change and the first one was for a month that the air was never even cut on. Only regular usage.

Has anyone else outside of the Elgin area besides me and the gentleman above gotten the meter yet?

I only slightly exaggerated to make a point but there were many times in May when night temps were in the high 40's so I'm not far off. No matter, it doesn't take a doubling of temps to double a power bill. The efficiency and cost of heating and cooling a house are on a logarithmic scale, not linear, so that a 50% increase in temps can result in a 100% increase in the cost.
