Hi Jan,
Thank you for bringing up this subject. Actually, in the early 1970s, when Calvary Chapel was beginning to experience a lot of growth -- they needed to expand their facilities.
The leaders of the church had found a large piece of land where they could build -- but, did not have the funds to proceed. They used to drive over to that land and pray for God to make a way.
At that time, a wealthy man in Orange County approached Pastor Chuck and offered to give them one million dollars for the project.
Pastor Chuck refused his offer. Why? Because he did not want him or the church to be obligated to such a large donor.
Eventually, they did acquire the land and build the facilities -- through smaller donations from many and through bank loans.
I believe Pastor Chuck is much like my senior pastor who led me to the Lord in 1987, Pastor Sam. Pastor Sam would not allow the church's finance committee to tell him about any of the tithes and offerings, i.e, who gave what.
Why? Because he is human -- and could be swayed by such information. So, he chose to not be told -- and that way, he knew that he would never show partiality because of money.
You will find Pastor Chuck Smith to be the same kind of Godly church leader and pastor/teacher.
God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,
Bill
