NPR President Vivian Schiller

Embattled NPR CEO Vivian Schiller resigned Wednesday after a hidden-camera video was released showing a fellow executive criticizing Republicans as "anti-intellectual" and calling the Tea Party "racist."

The resignation caps a tumultuous period for Schiller and comes just two days after she delivered a major speech in Washington outlining her vision for NPR's future. NPR Board of Directors Chairman Dave Edwards, in a statement on NPR's website, said the board accepted Schiller's decision, which is "effective immediately," with regret.

"The Board accepted her resignation with understanding, genuine regret, and great respect for her leadership of NPR these past two years," he said.

You DO realize, don't you, that it is not only NPR News that is threatened by funding cuts? It is PBS television too. You know, programs like Nova, Sesame Street, American Masters, etc. Here is a list of programs we all stand to lose:

http://www.pbs.org/programs/

And here are some of the programs we could lose from NPR: http://www.npr.org/programs/

No more Car Talk. No more Prairie Home Companion.

And don't think that just becasue Public Broadcasting can survive without federal funding we won't lose all of these great programs. Our LOCAL stations in many cases CANNOT survive.

Looks like I'll have to substantially increase my yearly pledge...
NOVA and Frontline are the only things I would salvage, and History channel or Discovery might step in to produce those two shows. This is a good time to get the government out of the entertainment business. Museums and parks should also be self-sufficient going forward.

Plus, such concessions are really not much of a sacrifice and it will help the RepubTEACons with their self esteem.

There are places in this country where the only other radio station that comes in plays "new country". You know, that insipid garbage that is basically just bad pop music with a slide guitar. There are other places where the only other choice is rock music. Then there are places, believe it or not, where NPR is the ONLY radio station that comes in.

As one who refuses to allow a TV in my house, I listen to radio a lot. And the only station I listen to is NPR. I love the classical music in the morning, the jazz in the evening, and on the weekends I enjoy Car Talk, Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me, This American Life, From the Top (America's best young classical musicians - some of them as young as 10!). I listen to Celtic music on The Thistle and Shamrock, Big Band Spotlight, Piano Jazz, and the list goes on and on.

I will without a doubt be donating as much as I possibly can during pledge drive next month. I will eat Ramen Noodles all month if I have to, just so I can keep my favorite shows on the air. And just think how many NPR tote bags I will receive! Big Grin
