One thing you can count on--now that this mistake has been taken note of in the media, Obama will not make it again.

By contrast, the thickheaded G.W. Bush determinedly refused to correct his mispronunciation of "newk-ya-ler," even though he HAD to know that his bumpkinesque error had been widely publicized.

Bush was stubborn and stupid in this matter. Obama will correct his pronunciation, demonstrating that he is not the chronic, uncaring throwback that Bush showed himself to be.

They'll make sure he only uses a teleprompter for the next 6 weeks - even when ordering in a drive-thru at McDonalds. Cool

You people and your constant nattering about teleprompters are becoming more laughable and looking more ludicrous every time you bring that irrelevancy up. Obama had no teleprompter when he faced the 140 Republicans in Baltimore last week and handled their questions with astonishing aplomb. Same goes for his meetng this week with Senate representatives. The man has frequently and convincingly shown himself to be a skilled estemporaneous speaker, but you wound-up-and-programmed critics seem incapable of discerning that obvious FACT. Why, in the face of all the evidence to the contrary, do you keep bringing up this erroneous and irrelevant silliness?

I hate to think what kind of performance G.W. Bush would have given before 140 Democratic representatives, not that he would ever have had the guts to stand before any such group and attempt to answer their questions.
I'll give Obama his dues. He is a skilled estemporaneous speaker. It's the content of his message that we all disagree with. What good is a great speaker when he does not speak the truth and is trying to convert our country to socialism? You can be the best at spelling and grammer but if you have no common sense what good is it?

UMMM, ughhh, uhhh, ummm Obama agrees with you!
The whole "Obama can't speak without a teleprompter" canard refuses to die despite all the evidence the contrary. I mean, he was a constitutional law professor at the University of Chicago. Of course he can put complex thoughts together and express himself.

One thing that slows presidents down when speaking extemporaneously, though, is the fact that every word they say is going to be carefully analyzed, so any mistake can have really negative consequences. For example, by nearly all accounts, Bush was a much better speaker at events away from cameras, and I imagine the same is true for Obama as well. When the cameras are rolling, it pays for presidents to go slowly and choose their words carefully.

Anyway, to echo ferrellj, it's the content of the president's message you should deal with, at least if you're like me and would rather this forum be a place for actual argument and debate and not just personal attacks at politicians you disagree with (and each other).

Back to the original topic, yeah, that's kind of funny and embarrassing. All it really tells me is that Obama has never been in the Navy or Marines, though, which is something I'm entirely comfortable with. The office of president has been over-militarized enough as it is.

I've never been in the Navy or Marines, either, and I'm astounded that the Commander in Chief of our armed forces doesn't know how to pronounce "corps".
Yeah, me too. Or at least I'm pretty surprised. It's actually not a rare mistake for people to make (or its opposite: hearing "corps" and spelling "core'), but the President and someone of his level of education should certainly know better. Or maybe he does and it was just a lazy mistake while reading his speech. Personally, since I don't use it often, it would probably take me an extra little split-second thought to remember to pronounce it as a French word if I was reading it out loud.
