No big loss there. Just another faddistic shop with overpriced, second-rate clothing.

Of course, in this state, where sales tax is depended upon disproportionately to fund public services, this means a bit of a dip in sales tax collections and yet one more contribution to the likelihood of the dreaded, but inevitable, proration. But is is more important, one would suppose, to retain the scandalously low property taxes paid by fat cat landowners such as the timber industry and agribusiness.

Overall taxes in Alabama are not low. Tennessee has high property taxes but no state income taxes. I compared my taxes with a friend of mine in TN and even though he paid more in property taxes, he paid less overall because I had to pay Alabama state income taxes. If you want to run more business off, just keep raising property taxes. You’ll finally be rid of them.
I had heard this rumor and hoped that it wasn't true. I certainly hate it for their local employees. I also hate it for myself because I love their clothes. I don't want to have to drive to Huntsville to shop.

I wonder if the landlord offered them a reduced lease that they just couldn't refuse...if not free due to the other vacancies. Old Navy would be perfect between Dick's and Target in the old Linen's and Things location. They probably would do twice as good there as they have ever done in Florence.
It was a joke..

From Wikipedia-

"Marge vs. the Monorail" is the twelfth episode of The Simpsons's fourth season and originally aired on January 14, 1993. The plot focuses around Springfield's buying a monorail from a conman and Marge's dislike of the purchase.

Is it so far fetched to imagine a con-man type convincing the local govt and citizens to sink the city's money into an expensive, gimmicky, tourist magnet that could bring jobs to the area? (monorail conductor..)

I can't understand why the powers that be can't see this. Oh well, lets just build another hotel and golf course. That will make things better.

Now that Obama's Health Scare bill is in our near future, you can forget the "Old Folks" thing 'cause they are all going to die off under the Obama plan.

Obama isn't your favorite negro is he?
Old Navy always seemed busy to me. When I would sit in the car waiting for the wife to go in and get something at ToysRUs I would see a constant flow coming and going from Old Navy and most would be leaving with a purchase. Now the entire little strip mall there will be empty and from what I hear Home Depot is not breaking any sales records either.

I'm just as dissatisfied with Obama's white half. His "negro" (your word, not mine...I use the socially acceptable terms black or African American) bloodline has nothing to do with it. His socialistic policies have everything to do with it.

You my friend are a racist. First off Obama isn't a negro. Color has nothing to do with this discussion.

Not a wise post there bitter. There are now families in Florence that have just lost their income.
My brother-in-law just started working there as a second job not long before they broke the news to the employees. I worked at an Old Navy part-time while I was in THE Navy. I loved working and shopping there. Their cloths are NOT expensive by comparison. The employee discount was great, too. Gap is a step up from Old Navy and Banana Republic is a step up from Gap. All the same company. Gap, Inc has an online shoe store, too. piperlime.com
I for one was not surprised to hear this. Toy's R Us, Goody's I expected to hear that Old Navy would be next. I do hate to hear any store having to close and for the employees there I'm sure they consider it a huge loss. As for the negative comment above I have no doubt he meant it just as he said it. Far too many people have wealth envy even though there aren't that many wealthy people out there. I wish there were more "fatcat" wealthy folks out there for if there were maybe through their spending more places would be coming to the area and not leaving it.
I like jeans from old navy.. Frowner They can have a good sale from time to time. It always seemed a mess when you went in there, especially now. I wish they would put Old Navy in the mall with a new manager that knows how to run a business. The Old Navy in Florence is sloppy compared to Huntsville, Nashville, Birmingham, etc.
