...a Black Bear.

I'll be honest, I kind of like it. It has historical ties to Mississippi and it's not a tiger or bulldog. I wonder how Ole Miss fans will accept it?

I just hope they name him Ackbar.

I personly thought it was a big mistake to do away with colonel reb, just to appease a small minority of people.

I thought the same, Carl, as do a lot of other people but the black bear it is...though we are still the Rebels! Actually, I hear that we are the Rebel "Black Bear Bryants" for this weekend-LOL.
The connection is related to William Faulkner...you should be able to find it if you google or even go to the original news story as to why the bear was selected. We are still the Ole Miss Rebels but will have a black bear on the sidelines such as Alabama has an elephant though they are the Crimson Tide and Tennessee has a blue tick hound though they are the Volunteers...

The Colonel and the Rebel had to go because it is no longer politically correct to reference anything pertaining to the South or that is offensive to anyone. I'm offended by the use of the word "black" in front of bear but since I'm white what offends me doesn't matter.

Remember November.

Yes, it is all about political correctness...but they didn't actually do away with "The Rebel" as their team name. They will still be the Rebels but will have a mascot other than Colonel Reb and that mascot will now be the black bear.
