I feel for the men and families of the men that fought and died fighting the Japanese who attacked us (The US). I guess we should expect no different though since this same President (Obama) is bent on appeasing and catering to those that attack the United States or want to. One can only hope that voters will wake up and rectify this enormous mistake that was made.
I have no problem with this bow. This is custom in Japan, the bow is to bring your head slightly below the emperors head. It is similar to a handshake. Where the Saudi bow was more of a bow of subservience.

Ronnie P.--

Can I hold you accountable for your fathers actions/mistakes? Should I base my opinion of you on them?

For the record I don't like the man and didn't vote for him, so I'm not saying this because I'm a supporter.

Obama's bow was a full kowtow, indicating that he considered himself inferior to the emperor. No other president or VP has bowed in such a manner. Most, just shook his hand. I've spent more than a few years in Japan on business.

Kowtow-the act of deep respect shown by kneeling and bowing so low as to have one's head touching the ground.

This was not a "full kowtow", what is a partial kowtow? The definition is pretty precise, the head touches the ground.

Here is a link of Eisenhower bowing several times.

NO! You gave the meaning for a full kowtow bow of obeisance to a chinese emperor, of which there are none at present. I referred to that to a Japanese emperor, there is a difference. The use of majesty is no problem, as that is the proper address for any monarch.

However, as the president is the head of state, as is the emperor, he should not have bowed to such an extent. In the pictures you referenced, both parties bowed slighty from the shoulders, in the European manner.

Or, there is Cheney, who just shook hands.

This afternoon Obama plans to apologize to Japan for not having all of our aircraft carriers in Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack. being the careless, thoughtless bas%^$#S that we are, we should have been more accomodating. He will try and do better next time we are attacked, if they will let him know beforehand.

Big Grin
I'm no expert on such matters but according to someone with some expertise in these matters:

"Pamela Eyring, the president of The Protocol School of Washington, said that while there's no "hard-and-fast" rule, a bow is not appropriate when national leaders meet.

"They're peers. ... Unfortunately, it isn't correct for a chief of state to bow to another chief of state," she told FoxNews.com. "It's not appropriate. He should not be bowing to other chiefs of state."

She said Obama was clearly trying to show respect, but that the royal couple would not expect such a gesture from a Western leader. Eyring, who reviewed the video of the encounter, said they seemed a "bit uncomfortable" watching Obama bow.

"When you're representing the United States of America, everything speaks ... on behalf of our country," Eyring said. "It's a visual. It shows more of a subservient look."

By most accounts, it hasn't been official protocol for a U.S. president, or any American, to bow to a foreign head of state or symbolic monarch. Other heads of state and officials, like former Vice President Cheney, have greeted the Japanese emperor with a handshake -- which Eyring said is the appropriate custom." http://www.foxnews.com/politic....com+-+Politics%2529
Where is Miss Manners when you need her huh? Big Grin Personally, he makes a bigger idiot of himself every day...I know other countries have to shake their heads like I do...it's sad really that he has no more respect for himself and his position than to bow to other leaders who are his equal not his superiors...had he had military experience he might would know some of the differences...you think?
I didkn't think him giving Queen Elizabeth the i-Pod gift looked too good, by the time he stays in there seven more years we may be so Broke that he will have to give her a Watermellon

You say he won't stay seven more years, yes he has it planned, he says I need the half Trillion from the Medicare Program, so I take it and them old people won't vote for me anymore but half of them will die and I can make all these Mexicans Citizens and them and all the Blacks Love me so I don't need them old people anyway. this will be a third World Nation by then anyhow, us old People may be the lucky ones, we won't have to live in it too long

In seven more years, he will have things turned around to where he will be president for life, like our neighbor to the South, Hugo Chavez.
Sad that even the Japanese were embarrassed by his actions...that's saying a lot if they didn't appreciate it...

And the ipod thing was a joke as was the collection of DVDs -- whatever happened to pieces of great art work or vintage bottles of cognac or something that at least gave the appearance of being regal -- instead of just out of college "hey dude!esque"...it's sad really...

More proof that you can grow up and be anything you want to be -- it doesn't mean you will be good at it -- but you can do it all the same...
