The academy nominates films that are more artistic, visionary, with intricate story lines. Many times these movies are lesser seen because they are made on smaller budgets, with less marketing. Just because a movie makes a lot of money or is highly enjoyable does not mean it is the essence of what "films" are all about.

Movies like 300 are mass marketed and produced and made to be entertaining and make money. This is evident as some films get TERRIBLE reviews but still make lots of money, (the movie Norbit comes to mind. Movies like Babel & The Last King of Scotland are made for the story, the emotion and the cinematography. They are often times the best reviewed films by critics and industry execs. These films may not set the world on fire in the box office, but they are artistic and encompass what the art of films are all about.

I'm told the movies are rented from the distributor; it uses a complicated fee system. However, the ticket price doesn't cover the cost of the film, but that's what they report on the news here (opening weekend gross is a big story on the morning news). Basically, it's the reason why a coke costs $4.50.

Do you consider waffles too kinky?
