COLUMBIA, TN (WSMV) -Police say a 22-year-old employee died after being shot during a robbery at Papa John's in Columbia.

The robbery happened at 1902 Shady Brook St. across from the Columbia Mall just before 10 p.m. Monday.

Police say the employee, Gordon Schaffer, was the only person inside the store when two masked men came inside and forced him to open the cash register and took money from the drawer.

According to a release from the police department, although Schaffer was "compliant and offered no resistance," the man with the gun shot at him multiple times, hitting him at least once.

A co-worker who was on the phone with Schaffer heard the whole thing happen and called police.

When officers responded, they found Schaffer on the ground near the register. He was still conscious and told them that two black men robbed him.

Schaffer was taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

The whole incident was captured on surveillance video. Police said the gunman is 5'8" with a heavyset build and was wearing a dark-colored hoodie, pants and shoes and light-colored gloves.

The second robber has a slim build and is approximately 5'9". He was wearing dark-colored clothing and shoes and light-colored gloves and was carrying a bag.

They didn't need to kill him but they did, I guess this was for Mike Brown.

Sad and outrageous!  Stupid also on the part of the robber, adding murder to what would have been "only" armed robbery.  That is a moot point, now that the thug is dead.

A similar case occurred in Montgomery, Alabama about 20 years ago.  A female delivery person with Pizza Hut protected herself from armed robbery by pulling her gun and shooting the robber.  She was fired, but public outrage persuaded Pizza Hut to reinstate her.

The robber in that case was not killed, but he suddenly lost interest in robbing and was arrested. Interestingly, that same robber had appeared just a short time earlier in a town hall meeting called to discuss gang violence.  He testified that gangs were misunderstood, that he just liked to socialize with his friends but that they were not into crime.  Sure.

Google up something like "pizza delivery shooting" and see just how common it is for these hard-working delivery persons to be robbed.
