My daughter danced in Florence at a very popular dance studio for 4 years. (I dont know if I can say the name without it being slander). When we left in 2005 she was diagnosed with ADD so we took some time off to get her schoolwork in order. (She is on honor roll nowSmiler) Anyway, when we left all bills were paid in full and we had always paid informally. Sometimes a check, sometimes cash. Well, six months later I get an itemized bill in the mail with all these trumped up charges. Costumes and recital fees for the year that we didnt participate. Fees from 2004! We had never received a paper bill before - not in 4 years........I called and explained that I didnt owe these charges and she wasnt even in the recital. Long story short, they have now sued me for almost $700 dollars. Of course I didnt have receipts where I had paid six months down the line. Now is 2 years later and she is sueing me. If your child is in dance - make sure you keep your receipts!!!!!!!...We never signed a contract or anything so I guess we'll see what happens in court.

Would this happen to be the same dance studio that held a recital at the mall a few months ago?

My pre-teen boy made me take him to this thing because some of his girlfriends were in it. It was the most disgusting display of sexuality I have ever witnessed!

When this thing started, I was in the crowd expecting to see a cute, entertaining display of little girls doing something akin to ballet. What I got was a mix of BET, MTV and moves I've watched in strip clubs. This was no graceful ballet. These moves were very suggestive and made the first graders look like little whor*s.

I was absolutely astounded. Seriously! Before I got the hell out of there, I witnesses these little girls shaking and giggling their butts up and down (kinda jiggling like jello) exactly like the girls in rap videos.

I was nearly sick to my stomach.

A headed back away from the crowd and watched the crowd instead. I was shocked at how many old men had were taking pics with cell phones and video cameras. I'm sure many of them were grand dads and daddys but there were some greasy, dirty people looking on, too. I suppose they could have been parents but my instincts told me differently.

It really gave me a serious case of the creeps.

The recital progressed up through the age groups until my son's friends danced. The outfits the older girls were wearing didn't leave a whole lot up to the imagination. I didn't watch them dance (my focus was on the perverts in the crowd) but if the first graders were any indication, it was definitely a PG-13 affair.

It wasn't long after this that I saw an ad in the TD from a girls who was starting up a dance team with Christian underpinnings. I hope she was a success.

WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU PARENTS DOING TO YOUR LITTLE GIRLS!
Would this be the same studio/owner that her husband has been charged, tried and convicted as a sex offender????? Guess she's got legal bills to pay....My niece used to dance for her. When the girl that went on "So You THink YOu Can Dance" and another girl did a highly erotic/lesbian style dance together -- we moved my niece to another studio -- as did many other parents.

All Star in Florence is a great studio -- the daughter and Mom run it and treat you like you are part of the family -- they know me by name and I don't pay any of the bills...

There are other good ones in the area should your daughter decide to dance again...
I dont have a daughter but I do know a little about dancing. These little girls grow to become big girls and they attend college. On weekends they frequent the night clubs in our area. Believe me what you have witnessed at dance recitals is MILD compared to the way they dance and act in these clubs. I only wish their parents were there to see them.
My daughter danced at Laura's Studio. Near what used to be Express Oil Change and Sonic on Helton @ Cox Creek. That is where the girl from "So You Think You Can Dance" studied. The staff was very cold and rude. Sometimes my daughter's class was taught by a few "older" girls. As in - 13 year olds. They weren't very patient, nor could they deal with a class full of 6 year old effectively. The monthly fees weren't too bad, but the recital fees were out the roof. I'm not a prude, my daughter was in her share of pageants, but the make-up they required a 6 year old to wear for recital was insane. I understand theatre and putting on a "show" and all that - but come on. Eyeliner, rouge, pancake, and red lipstick on a 6 year old? After the first recital we started looking for another studio.

We moved to Vicky Pace's studio and she danced there until we moved to Georgia. I cannot say enough good things about Vicky! Very proffessional, nice, warm, patient, and talented woman. Her staff was the same - all mature, talented, and very nice and polite young ladies. I highly recommend her to anyone in the Shoals.
I know Vicky too. She is a very nice person. My daughter danced with her for several years and we encountered a lot of the same issues as the first comments about not knowing whether you had paid fees and asking for them later. I know she had financial problems--it was in the paper. Fees she charged changed as the days on the calendar changed. As far as the dancing--she did an awesome job with these kids and my daughter still dances using a lot of the things Vicky taught her. If she had someone to run her business so that she could concentrate on what she does best--dance--she'd have the best studio in the area.
Yep, TSC -- that would be the studio where the owner's husband (who used to be a gymnastics instructor) was CONVICTED of being a sex offender. That's exactly the kind of people I want my daughter to be taught by...

Let her sue -- so long as you can show proof that your daughter didn't dance or take classes or wear any of the costumes she has billed you for -- counter sue for something like failure to provide services -- think back to how many kids 13 year olds taught the classes and not a trained teacher -- etc. -- put her bad stuff before the court and let them see who is worse...2004 was aobut the year that so many of her students left -- wonder if she did that too all of the parents from that group...

Oh, yea, did you have to sign anything when you enrolled your daughter -- like she will be in X shows per year? If you did, you may be hooked for pulling her out early...
Several years ago, my daughter was on an "All Star" cheerleading squad at the dance studio that you eluded to in your post. On this particular day, I dropped my daughter off for her required tumbling class. I don't remember why I left that day, because I usually would stay and watch, but what a mistake that was! The instructor, who was a UNA cheerleader at the time, left the class under the supervision of another student, who was about 12 years old. There was no adult supervision in the classroom and these girls were practicing gymnastics! While being spotted on her back hand-spring by the 12 year-old "instructor", my daughter fell and fractured her arm. I got a call from another parent that she had been injured. I contacted the owner after our trip to the ER. She claimed to have no knowledge of the incident and didn't seem to care. We never went back!

While I completely agree with the basis of your argument here, you may want to clarify why you would have been in strip clubs witnessing these moves as you stated. It makes your hopes for a successful Christian underpining dance studio endeavor seem less hypocritical.

I have been in strip clubs a half dozen times during bachelor parties to look at beautiful ADULT women stripping (you women don't really think we go golfing, do you?). Ya don't expect to see 6 year old kids doing that in a mall.

I don't hope the Christian person succeeds because she is a Christian. I hope she succeeds because she wants to run a business that (supposedly) won't teach 5 year olds how to strip dance.
I agree with GoFish's reasoning. You may not like Christians, you may not be one, you may not even think they are sane for their belief system - but you can be pretty certain that they will uphold a certain standard of decency. It may be out of hypocricy or it may be out of true faith, but the reasoning isn't as important as the actions.

I'm a woman, I'm a mother, and I'm a Christian. I've been in a few strip clubs. I do not see how the 4 are relevant to each other.
TSC -- they aren't related ... good point...

BTW immolate -- You don't have to go to a strip club to see and know what goes on there. Do you let your kids watch MTV -- you can watch about a half a dozen shows on their and see exactly what GoFish was talking about without ever stepping foot in a strip club or you could choose to watch a couple of movies on any of the movie channels -- a few that come to mind ATL and Varsity Blues-- for that matter you could just watch the Sopranos or a few of the Law & Order episodes...so Christianity is irrelevant to the point...

Well, as for my daughter personally, She only did routines, dances, and classes that I was perfectly comfortable with what she wore and had no problem with the dances. She mostly took Jazz, tumbling, and ballet. Now if you get into alot of the Hip Hop classes and contemporary, they do base it on the dances that are out now for adults. I did not agree with my daughter at 4 - 8 doing this and she didnt. Your right it is up to the parents to make the call right then and there because if you dont no one else will

No - no contract - in fact I told her at the beginning of the year we werent going to do the recital this year because she had done competion at about (4000 dollars!) the year before and she wanted to do other things besides dance like soccer. So she knew ahead of time. They danced 7 days a week alot of the time.......and yes this is the same studio where her husband was convicted of a sex crime so if I would have known about it when she was there I would have pulled her out anyway!!!!

I was there the day your daughter broke her arm. I was across the hallway I am so sorry that happened. But you are correct the supervision was pitiful

So sad that kids cannot just be kids anymore. No wonder so many kids are screwed up.

Its hard because you want your children to be involved and have fun things to do especially with their classmates etc. She is doing soccer now but I know first hand from my son playing football and baseball that there are downsides to sports also. Especially in small towns like the Shoals there is so much competition and politics, mainly among parents(sad). I guess we are all doing the best we can. I just try to make sure that if it has to do with my children Jesus approves. On the defense of the dancers........most of the time when they had us put makeup on them, It was just because you cannot see their faces on stage without it. I dont even let my little girl play in makeup. She will grow up soon enough. But, I did put the makeup on her for shows because you cannot see their faces in the audience without it. Up close they do look like Tammy Faye but I did not agree to it to make her look older or "sexy". Just a side note

You'll need to consider going to Killen if you want to participate in a quality soccer program. Florence's athletic director has ruined the city's program.
