FLORENCE - Sex offenders aren't allowed in Hanceville city parks any longer, and people in the Shoals think it should be that way all over the state.

Last week, the Cullman County city council voted unanimously to prohibit people convicted of sex crimes from being on city park property. While one city council passes an ordinance to ban sex offenders from public parks, some parents in Florence believe a ban isn't enough.

They want a state law making it illegal for convicted sex offenders to hang out where children and families play.

Currently there are 80 registered sex offenders living in the quad cities. Parents at Deibert Park in Florence say parks are places sex offenders just don't belong.

The last thing Jennifer Blair says she wants to think about when taking her two kids to the park is whether a registered sex offender is around. That's why Blair says banning them from parks is a no-brainer.

"You're not going to change a sex offender. Once they do it, they're going to do it again. It may take time, but it just takes that one little click and they're going to do it again," said Blair.

Blair and other parents at the Florence park agree that it's time a statewide law was passed that would prohibit registered sex offenders from setting foot inside city parks.

Out of all four Shoals cities, Sheffield has the most registered sex offenders at 30. Florence has the next largest number at 23. 20 registered sex offenders have home addresses in Tuscumbia, and in Muscle Shoals, seven are listed.

"It actually scares me," said Blair. "Being from California, I do have my guard up, so I'm aware of my surroundings, but some people aren't."

Parents at Deibert Park say they're ready for lawmakers to step up and take action before any damage is done. If nothing else, Blair says photos of registered sex offenders should at least be posted at city parks on a sign, to make people visiting the park more aware.

"If it was posted at the actual park they go to, they'll know who it is who's sitting next to them or walking by them in the park and then be more aware and be able to put their guard up a bit more," said Blair.

A very reliable source tells me that Tuscumbia has nowhere near 20 sex offenders within City Limits or Police Jurisdiction. Tuscumbia mailing addresses go as far east as Ay**** Heights, South almost to Russellville, and West to Barton. Don't let the numbers mislead you. They are very strict as to where the Offenders can/cant live, within the scope of their Police authority.

Keep them out of Sheffield to, some pictures of some of the perverts that needs to be banned for good http://www.waff.com/Global/link.asp?L=369208

Those pictures are from a year or two ago of people that were arrested at McFarland Park for allegedly loitering and approaching ADULT police officers. In other words, they may have been out for gay sex. Most of them had their cases dismissed or they pled guilty in city court to a misdemeanor. They are not all convicted sex offenders. This thread is about sex offenders, not "perverts" AKA homosexuals. There is a difference.
I have a little minor problem with this.

the label ' sex offender'

didja know there is a kid in california right now with the ' sex offender' tag that will follow him around for the rest of his life.
he's 12 years old.
his crime? someone sent him a picture of a nude 12 year old girl. he didn't ask for it, he was just 1 of a dozen that got it.

he was guilty of an unwanted picture sent via a cell phone. he was cauht because his name was listed as a recipiant in the 'sent' box. he had already deleted the offending picture.

but now he's a 'sex offender'.

make a rule that bans real, true child molesters from public parks, and defines them apecifically as an adult who engages in sex with a minor child 5 or more years younger that the adult;s current age. i'd be all for that.

why the 5 years? because there is a guy in upstate new york with a sex offender tag because when he was 18 he took naughty polaroids of his 17 year old girl friend. she's 3 months younger than him.
they were planning on getting married, but now he can't get within 500 feet of her.

personally, i think if a person is a real child molester - a pedophile - i think the easiest thing to do would be to put a .45 hollowpoint through their head. no more worries about where they are or if they are lurking around parks or school.

problem solved.

You, my friend, have just moved up several notches on my opinion list. Cool
Your solution may be one of the best rehab programs available.

Yep, the courts have gone mad with their 'sex offender' labeling. All they are doing is 'watering down' the sex offender registry. People begin to hear these stories about how some people are classified and lose trust in the registries. They also look at a registry and see that XX number of sex offenders live in a neighborhood, but have to dig much deeper to find out which ones they really need to worry about and which ones were kids accused of statutory rape. Kindof like the way the drug laws have gone in the past decade or two.....
BTW, you heard about the 18 year old that was convicted of statutory rape because his 16 year old girlfriend got pregnant. They had been dating for almost two years, he was putting off college to work full time while she finished high school. Both sets of parents were involved and the couple were planning on getting married. When the baby was born, he was listed on the birth certificate, which is what prompted the involvement of the police.....

If I can find the link Ill post it.......
