As I was driving to work this morning, I was trying to think of people from the Shoals area that have actually played in the NFL for at least one season. Below are the names that I came up with but I am sure I will miss someone since I have been away since 1979. Please look at the list and add name(s) that I have overlooked. Remember, they had to go to one of the local high schools and play at least one season in the NFL to make the list.

Robert Woods
Larry Woods
Harlon Hill
Dennis Homan
Jason Allen
Antonio Langham
Ozzie Newsome
Ed West

you're right, mike. getting old is highly over-rated. here's another former brooks lion for the list: william bowens---- oakland raiders
Frank Hembre Nunley (born October 1, 1945 in Lexington, Alabama) is a retired American football player who spent ten seasons in the National Football League (NFL), all with the San Francisco 49ers. Selected in the third round (62nd overall) of the 1967 NFL Draft, the former linebacker possessed the unique nickname of Fudgehammer due to his sweet disposition off the field.
JK Hawk, to make this list the person had to attend a local high school and play at least one season. I thought of Richard Todd as well but he did not attend a local high school. Todd ran the bone at Bama to perfection and then went on and had a stellar career with the Jets. He also played a year or two with the Saints if I am not mistaken.

Gary, same thing with Jim Bishop, he did not graduate from a Shoals area high school.

Good names to remember though, thanks for the input.

I'm old enough to remember the Fudgehammer near the end of his career with the '49ers. If I'm not mistaken, he played for LCHS.

That is possible because he was born in the house next door to my grandmother's and that is between Lexington and Rogersville (LCHS).

I played Little League against Patrick Swoopes at Point Park in the early 70's. I know he went to Georgia on a football scholarship but what pro team did he play for?

I remember the name Billy Whitt from the Times Daily. What pro team did he play for as well?

Witt played a season for Buffalo which happened to be a haven for small college players during the late 80s and early 90s. Swoopes played for Nawlens, Miami, and KC. His older brother Ronnie was All-SEC at Georgia.

I think Billy WITT also was with the Atlanta Falcons when the football strike happened.

Hi Gary,

My brother, Bob, and I lived in Keller Court and George and his older brother, James Arthur, were our friends. We played a lot of sandlot football; but, we would not let little George play -- because we were afraid we would hurt him.

Fast forward to the 1960s. Little George made All American playing guard for Georgia. And, my thoughts were, "We were afraid we would hurt him?"

George and James Arthur also had an older brother who played quarterback for Ole Miss.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill
Hi all,

This discussion is bringing back memories for me. I attended Sheffield High (1951-55) and played varsity basketball. In my senior year, Harlon Hill came home after his first year with the Bears. I played on a company sponsored basketball team and we had a game against Coca-Cola -- who had Harlon Hill on their team.

I will never forget running down court at full speed -- and then thinking I had run into the wall. It wasn't the wall -- it was Harlon Hill and he was as hard as the wall.

Thanks for the memories,

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Leigh Tiffin also...think he went to high school at Russellville HS.

Whoops! I responded without looking at the thread title. NVM Smiler
Simian J. Anthropoid, former standout at Gravelly Springs High, played middle guard for a short time on the Minnesota Vikings around 1967, but his career was cut short when league officials discovered he was a shaved-down gorilla. They said they were slow in acting on the situation, since Simian looked pretty much like most other NFL recruits from the Shoals area.
