Yes it is that bad and worse you simply cannot believe the smell in some cities. While I think the EPA goes too far sometimes China is proof companies cannot be trusted to do the right thing regarding the environment. Yes I am a Conservative.
China is emulating the experience of most nations that go from agrarian to industrial, Read about the UK and US at the onset of the industrial revolution. For miles around coal fired industries, most plants died -- dark and satanic mills. However, due to better nutrition, people lived longer and the infant mortality rate declined quickly. As nations get wealthier, they can afford the luxury of a cleaner environment.
I remember the fish kills in the river and smoke from coal that would remove the paint from cars parked nearby.
That said, I'm not buying food products from their mainland.

Just curious. When you refer to "dark and satanic mills," do you have a particular literary work in mind?
I knew about them having to wear masks often but did not realize the scope of pollution till seeing these. Scary stuff.
