Yep, that's what my kid's school sent out in email form regarding their end of the year report cards. We can either provide a prestamped envelope, pick it up from school or get from online site STI!!! The reason: ecomonics!!! ok so let's do a little math - even if you have 1000 kids (not sure exactly how many are there) and multiply the price of postage that is only $440!!! Probably what I've paid in taxes for 1/2 of the year!

I know teachers and some board members view this site. Can you PLEASE tell me why I know have to provide a way to get my child's report card? I think instead of cutting a mear $500 or so from the budget perhaps we should take an accross the board 2 percent pay cut from administrators - that would save a whole lot more.

Even though it only is around $500 in postage they still have to pay someone to stuff 1000 envelopes, pay for those envelopes, arrange for a pickup etc. It's going to tie someone up a day at a minimum.

Willing to bet the majority will choose the online option and most people are not going to bother with the stamps, so the few that are left they can probably knock it out in a hour or two and still do their regular job. Add that up 8-9 times and you'll probably save around a month of someone's salary.
I had to do it in TN back in the 90's. That or come to school on the last half day. Since the half day didnt count toward attendance, most of us just brought in a stamp and envelope.

I know postage is getting high, but I think that I could afford a stamp if I wanted a paper copy of a report card. Its not like the schools are rolling in the dough right now anyway.....

Jeepin'
Yes Sofa I could, I did and guess what? Not all my kids grades were in there. In fact, some teachers have failed to put in any grades since the first of last month!

I am quite capable of checking grades on STI, which I do freqently. I just wished the administrators would hold teachers to the same standards as the do their students - i.e., please upload current grades at least once a week.

As far as saving the schools money, I wouldn't mind if they were truly serious - like I said cut salaries 2 percent across the board; combine bus trips so you aren't running 1/2 (or less) loads, etc THEN I would say they were serious about saving money. As far as hiring someone to stuff the envelopes - have some of those with 12 month contract employees who don't have much to do over the summer take a couple of hours to do so.

Oh and think about those parents who may not have a computer at home, no gas to drive to the school, and/or no money to pay postage and envelopes - especially if they have children in multiple schools.

Is the middle school the only school doing this? I don't think it's system wide.
Got a life -thank you very much. I'm NOT complaining about a mere 44 cent postage stamp and envelope - what I AM complaining about is the statement of due to the economic situation. Well if the situation is dire, than cut some salaries - you'd safe a whole lot more money that way.

That's what's wrong with society - keep making the parents pay without expecting some sacrifices from the teachers unions
Ok, I was going to stay out of this but I have to respond. Teachers have been sacrificing our buts off! I know for years I have spent well over $1000 out of my own pocket for supplies for my classroom for my students for activities we do in the room or just basic things we need on a day to day basis. This last year there was no money coming from the state for us to use for classroom so that $1000 quickly turned in double that amount-how many of you can say that you would spend that much out your own pocket for your job and not expect to be repaid! But I am repaid by my students everyday by their learning and their smiles when I continue to do activities that I usually do which I would have to cutout if I depended on money from the state. So the next time you tell your child's teacher to sacrifice her pay stop and think that she may just have to cut out something she had planned to teach your child that day because she couldn't afford to buy what she needed to teach the lesson for that day.

i have two kids in school
because of that i know a lot of teachers i would LOVE to see have their salary doubled.
good teachers aren't paied enough.
i also know a lot of teacher i'd like to see tossed out on their rear before they even have tiem to get to the class room.
poor teachers are paied to much.

we acctually had one of my sons teachers pause i nthe middle of a parent teacher conference so she could take a cell phone call from her son about what was for dinner, and during the conference she acctually said the acctual words ' i don't even know why i took this job. i was burnt out at my last school, i guess i just thought it'd be better here, but it's just the same thing all over again.'
My comment has absolutely nothing to do with the skills of a teacher nor the sacrifices of a teacher- I was merely pointing out do not cut 400 from the budget to mail out report cards while ignoring a good part of the issue. Did you know teachers in this area hold some of the highest paying jobs in this area overall?

Personally, while I support teachers overall, I am so tired of hearing about how they are so underpaid and overworked. I know of no other job where you can get a 2 month vacation; pay for a beautiful house in Creekwood and drive a decent car. Try telling the parents of five who make minimum wage they have to pay MORE so they can get their childs report card. THEN talk to me about sacrifices.
Think about it this way. Your taxes pay the salary of teachers. Guess what? A teacher pays taxes just like you. In essence they contribute as much as you do for their living. They may get a summer vacation but they have to make lesson plans for the next year, read selections given to their students, and do other necessary functions. Give them some credit. They do prepare our children for life scholastically.
I would like to know where to sign up for this 2 month vacation with pay is and I'll be the first in line. The only reason we are paid in the summer is because we are 9 month employees and our pay is spread out over 12 months so we will continue to get a check during the summer. As far as a summer vacation...have you ever driven past a school during the summer? I don't know where your kids go but where I teach there is not a day that goes by that the parking lot is not half full of especially elementary teachers getting their rooms ready for next year..because you know we can't start the year with the same bulletin boards that we ended the year with and most of us put up totally new ones from what we did the previous year. Most of these are handmade! There is no pay for this to work in the summer getting rooms ready, working with other teachers on lesson plans for next year and just cleaning the room. This summer I will be teaching an elementary summer reading progam that I did last year that the kids loved and I will be paid for a half day.
Pay attention to two little words: New Jersey

All you have to do is see what is going on there and other places to see what is the beginning of a resistance of sorts for passing hiring taxes for schools. Btw, like I said BEFORE I am not talking about individual teachers, especially those who do a great job, please reread my post. Teacher UNIONS, administrators, etc suck up a great deal of tax money, while parents and the classroom teacher not only pay more taxes but have to provided more and more supplies to the classroom! Heck, I've talked to one parent who's child was required to bring in Toilet paper.
