I love Popeye's chicken and consider it the best fried chicken in the Shoals but it's getting harder and harder to justify eating there. For one, these days, I want the kitchen cooks to be wearing those disposable gloves when they handle the food and here you're lucky to see one of the front girls wearing the gloves. Second it seems that they are trying to nickle and dime you to death. Now they have a sign up "no outside food or drink" can be brought into the restaurant. So much for if the kids want to bring their sippie cups or stop to get them a McDonalds Happy Meal if they don't want Chicken. Ask for any type of substitution and you get hit with a substitution charge that is depending on your race. I got charged for substituting a leg for a thigh but the guy that came in while I was eating there was not charged for several legs instead of thighs. It's getting to the point that it's almost not worth going as even with the taste of the Chicken what you have to endure well kind of takes the edge off the taste.

Maybe I'm just expecting too much and am too critical because it is the best chicken in town so I'll just put up with it I suppose.

I always thought it was because I was white. Never fails if I'm with a friend that's black, service is good. If I'm by myself or with other white friends, I always get skimped on or nickel/dimed for extra sauce or anything they don't have over the counter

I decided a couple weeks ago I'm never going back. If they want to treat me different because of race, they can lose my business.
I agree about the service. The food is good but the only lady there who will even speak to you is the lady who used to work at Southern BBQ. The rest of the staff just look at you like you crawled out from under a rock. I called the number on the window to complain about the drive-thru service and was told they couldn't help me b/c that store was no longer one of theirs. Won't be back...though I do love the chicken, it's not worth getting upset over it. There are plenty other places who will gladly except my money.
@Matted Got friends from all walks of life. But it's pretty self explanatory when you walk up to the counter to get extra sauce, and the black guy that just walked up there before you got a handful of it, then you ask for an extra 1 and they want to charge you for it (It's not until I pull out my debit card to put that 35 cents on it, that they just decide to give it to me for free. I'd assume because they get charged so much a transaction, and placing a transaction for 35 cents just isn't worth it. Smiler ). And with it happening to other folks I know that that has ate there as well, you get a little suspicious.

@Carol
They don't want to offend the churches. So if they know you are part of one, they're not going to piss in those cheerios. Smiler
i use to eat at popeye's regularly. i worked at one of those "day old" bread stores where they bought their buns. one year for work, we ordered fried turkeys for our tgiving dinner. i went to pick them up. while i was there, i saw them drop chicken in the floor and put it back on the counter to use. they also used a cloth to wipe the floor where the chicken was, and then wiped off the counter and some of the kitchen equipment with it. no one washed their hands the entire twenty minutes we were there. after that, i never ate there again, and i didn't eat any of our dinner. salmonella, e. coli, norovirus, oh my...
i talked to the manager on duty while i was there. just let them know from a customer perspective how nasty it was (in a nice way). he assured us our food was prepared in the most thorough, cleanest way possible. went back four hours later to get our second load, it was still nasty. so i did report it. they took my name, number, and the complaint and said they would look into it. never heard back from them. the lady i spoke with said they usually pay a visit to the place in question. but as far as the racism piece, the owners always treated us extemely nice, as well as the staff. maybe the people having problems with popeyes went when an unfriendly or racist staff member was there. hard to hold the entire place accountable for one person's stupidity.
I don't know about picking up food off the floor and trying to serve it but I have heard from that the owners are very strict about saving money at every turn and opportunity and I wouldn't doubt that someone would attempt to sell the chicken rather than toss it in attempts to save money.

I hope it's not true but I don't doubt it hearing what I have heard in the past. I hate it also because it's definitely the best tasting fried chicken available from fast food places.
wearing the latex gloves are not currently required by health codes, i don't believe.
if the person handleing the food (at any point) observes propler hygene/saftey measures, gloves are not required.
if they don't, gloves aren't going to help anyway. the counter people are rarely, if ever, in direct contact with the acctual food, so have no need for gloves.

of course, this is all based on experiances in a burger joint, chicken places might be a little different.

and while i won't accuse any one of racism, to my personal experiance the black health inspector lady that tends to work the florence places more often than others seems to find less things wrong in places that have a black female manager in charge at the time of inspection.
that could just be 100% coincidence and timing, but it could also be a lil shot of favoritism based on race and gender.
i'm not saying that this IS the situation.. just saying that it MIGHT be, from things i've seen and experienced....
