Thought I would start a thread on this. The Dixie Gas Station on 72 in Tuscumbia has risen 20 cents a gallon overnight. The Chevron also in Tuscumbia went up 10 cents a gallon last night as well.

I know in other states there are laws about this and I believe our state also has one. If you have it documented would you drop an email the State attorney general's website detailing what you observed and the dates and if you have photos as I would love to see people prosecuted, eventually, who take advantage of situations like this.
keep in mind that the law states you cannot raise prices by more than 25%. that equates to about an .80 cent rise on gas priced at $3.50 per gallon. you may not like it but supply and demand does not take a break even during disasters.
I would like to see something done as well. A woman I know needs a generator and of course they are all gone here. She called Cornith MS and one that is usually about 400.00 they were asking her 1500.00 for. I don't know the store though.
Fuel prices go up and down all the time. How ever if someone is taking advantage of another persons misfortune I hope they get what they deserve. It is time for patience from us as our neighbors buy fuel for generators and such. They can't buy it in their town so they have to come here. Don't create a shortage by hoarding gas.
You have to remember also that most of these stations ran out of gas yesterday. If they can show that their cost went up when they re-ordered, there's nothing that can be done. I overheard one manager calling to order gas, and she reduced her order due to the price increase she was receiving from the supplier.
Stay away from Lewisburg Tn. When wal marts got people with Alabama tags waiting on gas and buying up gas cans the Lewisburg Tn WalMarts raised gas prices by 20 cents while people from Alabama waited in line. They also raised prices on gas cans and generators. In other words, the people who came here from Alabama needing goods and services because of Alabamas devestatios are getting gouged by walmarts 1 local station hasnt raised its price. Now you know why wally world is king!
Then the supplier is at fault for the gas price increase. We all realize that price goes up and down. But a 10-20 cent jump one night is hard to take. I too hope those who prey on these misforutnate people get what they deserve.
Even if legal and within the limits it goes to the character of the owner/operator. Quite a contrast between reports such as the $1500 generator, gas prices jumping as they are and the aftermath of the Japan disasters. Whether instilled or not, into their psyche, reports were always of courteous and thoughtful people.
America, the South, and Alabama all have their share of similar type people but then there are those who look to kick someone when they are down..
Dixie probably doesn't have a contract and has to buy what's left at the price distributors charge them. Not their fault. Raising the prices also keeps the playing field even so everybody can get a little and nobody hogs it all.
Dixie went up ten cents a gallon yesterday when everybody was lining up for gas.
I have noticed everybody else has gone up about ten cents a gallon since yesterday.

This has nothing to do with supply and demand. IT has everything to do with greed.
I heard something on WHNT news this morning that the attorney general was looking into reports of price gouging since the storms. Hadda go to work and couldn't listen to the whole thing, but apparently the powers that be think it's worth investigating.
I commend the stations in Muscle Shoals that DID NOT follow the 10-20 cent increase that some of the stations on 72 implemented when they had folks lined up from Athens. Muscle Shoals Walmart and Raceway on Woodward come to mind as GREAT CITIZENS. They could have easily followed the others to 3.79 but they were at 3.64 this afternoon still!
Those of you that decided to raise your prices 'just because' will be remembered by myself and others for a long time. You will not get my business any longer, even if you are a penny or two cheaper than where I buy gas.......
Thanks Capt,
That's kind of why I started this thread so people could keep track of those who do this. One of those who went up is a station I have bought gas from for years. They won't be getting my business from now on. They had cars lined up on Hwy 157 and went up while people were buying gas.

absolutely, jimi. i'm not defending "gougers" at all. there is some point where a price adjustment to reflect demand morphs into "gouging." but "greed" is a necessary component of capitalism whether you like it or not.
Y'all are being a little judgemental, it would rarely be an individual store that is raising the price but only the store being notified by their wholesaler that their price is going up and that they have no choice but to raise theirs if they want to stay in business. These stores who people feel are gouging them are likely not marking up the gas more than 2 or 3 cents per gallon.
As of 10PM last night, Kangaroo in Sheffield still had gas for $3.65/gal. The highest I saw was at the intersection of Wilson Dam Rd and Avalon Ave. in Muscle Shoals @ $3.88/gal.
I was talking with a friend in New Hope this morning where they have severe damage. He said he was there in Kimbell/South Pittsburg in the line to get gas and it went up 10 cents a gallon while he waited. 2-3 cents a gallon is nothing to complain about. It s the 10-20 cents a gallon while you wait that's the kicker.
Exactly. And if the suppliers are doing it, then the gas stations need to turn them in themselves. A call to NBC or ABC would usually turn the hounds loose on something like this, especially at a wholesale level. We watch these stations all go up together for months, not more than a penny or two off. Then, all of the sudden, the stations closest to Decatur, the ones that just happen to have lines, start going up a dime at a time. I may not be the smartest cookie but I'm no idiot either.......

Lowe's in Muscle Shoals had a sign up this afternoon that they have them.

There is contact info at the bottom of the page for reporting stuff like this.

The prices I saw at the Lowes stores, and Home Depot, were the regular price, if not a little off regular price. I think they were around $790.00.
As of 1900HRS, yesterday (04/30/2011), gas at the Muscle Shoals Murphy Oil (WalMart) was $3.64/gal.

Yet, we still have the lowest gas prices in the world.
