Not unless that tear the old grocery store down. As it was said by dlytle they rarely renovate existing buildings and I doubt they will make an exception here. I recall in one area where I used to live of them renovating once. and then two years later moved out into a brand new complex was made five miles away. The renovated place was actually closer to their competitor in that case, so it really shows how they rather have their own design instead of a retrofit.
You have got to be kidding! Do they seriously think people from the (heart of the) Shoals area will drive that far? It may be a good thing for those living in Central, and they may draw support from the Cloverdale area, but I doubt anyone from the Colbert side would drive that far - at least not on a regular basis. I hope their planning committee has done their homework. This seems like a ludicrous idea to me!
Okay, first of all I've not spoken to anyone, official, at Publix nor do I know anything for sure.

If though, anyone that knows Publix, IF Publix is going to locate here they will most likely do the same thing they do everywhere else they have located. By that I mean build a store with many other spaces, satellite stores, to support other businesses and not just a grocery story and by doing that accomplish two things. First help and support to pay the cost of their facility and second other businesses that help draw patrons to their store also. That said my guess for where they will locate, if indeed they have signed papers and are about ready to start is as follows:

First guess : Adjacent to Martins Department Store on the right as you look at Martins from the street. The area is actually wooded now and is quite large and would support not only a Publix but room for other stores.

Second Guess: Where Martin's Department store is located now. Tear it down and build there as well as the adjacent property that is wooded making a larger shopping area which would include a "new" Martin's store in the same complex.

Third Guess: Either where the current Tomato House is now, corner of Huntsville Road and Cox Creek or just down Cox Creek adjacent to the Lowes property or across from there when O'Reilly's Auto store is currently. It's relocating next to Sonic so that property could be available.

Other locations could be the old FoodMaxx location that is in the K-Mart Shopping Center or where the old Lowe's was near to Family Ford.

Lots of fun speculating but if the papers have been signed and it's a done deal I don't see the secrecy in keeping the location private. My bet, if I was betting, would be along Cox Creek either where Martin's is or directly to the right of it where the wooded area is.

Lets see how my guesses are once the secret is really out. And I do hope Publix is coming as it will be my primary choice of food store.
Y'all know I sometimes have those way out random thoughts. This litle anecdote cam from a Sunday School tacher over 60 years ago. The family returned from church and the mother directed the little boy to wash his hands to get rid of the germs so he could eat Sunday dinner. Later at the table she noticed a perplexed look on his face, When she asked him the problem he answered, "Jesus and germs, Jesus and germs. That's all I hear and I can't see either one of the them."Every time Publix hits the Forum again this story comes to mind!
The meat dept is excellent...fresh fish market is too. Check out this week's ad.
http://publix.shoplocal.com/publix/default.aspx?action=entryflash& Oh yeah...they double coupons, accept expired coupons and honor competitors coupons. You can still get paper or plastic bags free of charge. They take your groceries out and have a no tipping policy. They give much back in $ to the community, esp schools. The store is very clean and bright...it's where shopping is a pleasure.

What all these articles have in common is Publix is always ranked as one of the Best Supermarkets by surveys and research. Publix isn't always the cheapest but the store branded merchandise at Publix is often better than the brand named products or just as high quality. That's not the case at many other store chains ( for instance "Great Value" at Walmart).

Publix supermarkets are always very clean and the Meats, bakery, deli, seafood markets etc are so far ahead of anything you will find in this area that there is no real comparison.

Even if you don't care to shop at Publix rest assured that the opening of a Publix in the Shoals area will raise the bar and prompt each other grocery store to improve their operations. If you want to see and shop a Publix the two closest, at this time, are Athens, located on the left (North) side of Highway 72 just past (east of) Interstate 65, about half mile down the road. There is also a Publix in Madison and one in Decatur, on the Beltline.
I think the ideal spot would be somewhere off the new bridge headed towards Cox Creek or on the Muscle Shoals side. It would draw folks who live along the sides of the river in higher priced homes. Oh yeah...Publix has a wonderful catering section for special orders, an excellent pharmacy & very pleasant employees.

Ronnie P., I scored some excellent humus at Food World or whatever Southern Family on Florence Blvd has become.

Publix is awesome. They are clean, have great meat, a wonderful deli (the home made sub roll is amazing), and the bakery is second to none. In Sarasota, three different people who learned to bake and decorate cakes at Publix have gone out on their own and opened cake decorating businesses and all of them have more business than they can handle. That is how good the bakery is. Oh, and many of their stores have a sushi chef on staff who keeps a fresh assortment available and will make to order if you do not see what you want.

They also have cooking classes, give to local charities willingly, and own a chain of restaurants called Crispers. Crispers has the most amazing soups sandwiches and salads you will ever eat. If they do well with the supermarket, hopefully they will eventually open a Crispers here.
chick, I have no doubts that is what you were told and will be told until the ground is broke and construction is well under way. In other words don't go making bets on what you were told as most all companies or businesses will do the same thing when inquiries are made until the purchase process is complete, plans and documents are filed with local governments and permits are also filed and secured.
I stayed with my daughter recently for a couple of weeks. I visited the Publix near her house several times. Sorry, but my opinion is that it's just another grocery store. This isn't a case of just wanting what you can't have, is it?

I don't agree that it is expensive. I didn't see high prices and my daughter says she gets really good deals there.

Oddly, for a grocery store, I noticed really good deals on patio furniture. Time before last when I visited, I saw a bistro set for $99. This last time, I saw an unbrella-top patio set for $99.
Publix is one of those hit and miss places. Yes, sometimes using their ad coupons (like the one cent ones) or using “double” coupons, you can get good deals. For the most part, the last time I visited one (a year or so ago) they were expensive and this included the Publix’s brand items. The do have a wonderful bakery and in my opinion have the best birthday cakes. I also agree that the subs are very good--but expensive, I believe around $7-8 for a footlong. They have decent chicken as well. Overall, it would most likely be one of those supermarkets that I would visit occasionally but not be my number one choice. Also, some people mentioned about the Publix stores being neat, bright, clean and so on,the one in Madison seemed rather run down and extremely disorganized the last time I visited but that was a while ago...maybe it has improved since.

It's silly of me to even ask, but semi, if it doesn't matter to you, and you wouldn't shop there anyway, why would you ask them about their plans to build a store here? Did something just recently happen, after you contacted them, to make you decide not to shop there? [/quote]

No, not silly at all for you to asked. Wink
There's been much talk over several months of a Publix being built here & the answer was pretty much that it would never happen. With some saying now that it is going to happen, I was curious to hear the answer from the "horse's mouth".
As for my not shopping there, from what I can gather it's more expensive than your normal grocery store, so I wouldn't be able to afford it. Cool
