It is official Publix is coming. I looked at thier ad from Huntsville last week and seriously I was very impressed. I feel for the Wal-Mart employees now. Coperate office will really put the pressure on these goos people now. Look for peices to go at Wal-Mart drastically. As for me and my house! WE WILL SHOP PUBLIX! I also feel sorry for the Wal-Mart red neck shoppers who have no clue what fresh is.

I bought groceries yesterday at the Publix in Athens. I've posted before that there are three within 6 miles of my house. But I have to say that anyone that thinks Publix is "high class" to the point that they have to call Wal-Mart shoppers "rednecks" tells me that the person making that statement is the redneck.
Publix is nice, so are our Kroger stores we have here, but sheesh people need to get out a bit if they think these stores are so "upscale" that anyone that shops anywhere else are rednecks. I also have Targets near me and they're as "nice" as Publix. Sad that a freaking grocery store brings out the "snobs". LOL!!! Wow, just wow is all I can say.
You said it, Jennifer.

First of all, if shopping at a Publix thrills you that much, you need to get a life. Second, if you think having a Publix here will put a dent in Walmart's profits, you are seriously mistaken. Third, how nice a store is depends a lot upon the location, not the brand name.

Glad we are getting a Publix, but the location is not convenient for me. I would rather save my gas and shop at Food World, Big Star, or even Hometown, then drive all the way out Cox Creek Blvd. to save 10 cents on arugula.

P.S. I hardly ever go to Walmart either, for the same reason.
Jennifer, I agree with your take on this. Yes, Publix is "upscale" in many ways, but their prices are often significantly higher than Walmart's for the same items. On the other hand, Publix has sales that are really attractive for some items. A judicious shopper will check out both Walmart and Publix and get the best mix of prices.

Publix has a heckuva lot more items to choose from than Walmart. Walmart, in the last couple of years, severely reduced the number of items they offered. The reason Walmart did that was to absolutely maximize the dollar return per foot of shelf space. Now they realize that--Guess what?--people NOTICED and people complained and apparently some people went elsewhere to buy what Walmart was no longer selling. They have begun to re-stock some of those items, but they will never offer the variety that is available in a Publix or a Super Target. Just one simple example. My wife and I like lamb prepared in a stew recipe that is dee-licious. Chances of even finding a leg of lamb in a Florence supermarket on a given day are poor. It is stocked only as an occasional item. But Publix always has it.

Food World gripes me with their bogus bargains. They advertise an item for some stated price, claiming in that ad that you will save "up to $XXX." But the alleged regular price of the item is higher than they ever charge for it in the first place. Unless one just fell off the turnip truck, that kind of fabrication is pretty obvious.

One more gripe. The various dollar stores, with the exception of Dollar Tree, have escalated their prices on many items very significantly in recent months. They are no longer as attractive as a means of avoiding crowds and beating the prices of the big guys. Dollar Tree gives great value. I honestly do not know how they can sell some of their items for just a buck, but I am happy that they do.

We've got the Wal-Mart super stores here too and they stay packed.
Daddy, how could you?? "Coperate office", "goos people", "look for peices" "thier". Are you relaxing your vigilance? I remember a time when this sort of thing would have driven you into a fit of rage. I miss my old daddy, guns-a-blazin, repremands-a-spewing, red faced, foaming, rage and ranting. All perfectly spelled and puntuated of course. AH..the good old days.

Than drive... not then.... I couldn't resist.
I disagree with your assesment that location = nice. It is funny to hear that ANYWHERE in the City of Florence could be thought of as inconvenient to ANYWHERE else in Florence. Can it be more than a ten minute drive from anywhere in the city of Florence? Have you ever lived any where else?

Arugula? I think the only place in Florece that you can get this will be the Publix.

I am completely off topic but you should try preparing lamb shanks or ox tails if you enjoy stewed meat. And to contribute to this fine topic, I am sure you can buy them at Publix.

Try getting from the Petersville area to Wal-Mart in under 10 minutes during the daytime. Cox Creek Pkwy is terribly congested with poor drivers.
High class depends on how you are looking at it.

I'm sure there's some people there who like to cook. Sure there's a lot of things you can cook from the basic foods that a Food World or Walmart carries, but if you want to try something a little exotic like something you've seen on food network you may be disappointed.

A good example is ginger. I don't think I've seen it at Wal-Mart fresh. I definitely haven't seen sesame oil, but both of those are likely to be carried at Publix. As far as I'm concerned a real full-service grocery store hasn't existed in the shoals since the late 90s when Foodmax closed. Sure Publix is no Whole Foods or Trader Joe's but it's a better experience and selection than your typical Wal-Mart and that's enough for me.

The remote backwoods environment in which Mountain Man grew up obviously did not afford him the benefit of strong schooling in the King's English. Thus, I cut him some slack. Be assured that his numerous errors did not go unnoticed, but I was spared the tasks of wiping that foam off my chin and tucking my eyeballs back to the proper depth in their sockets.

The best fresh ginger in town can be obtained at the Lauderdale County Farmers' Market. Marilyn Staggs is the Japanese-American master gardener who usually occupies two booths on the north side. She grows ginger in her garden and sells it at a very reasonable price and I guarantee you it is as good as any you can find anywhere.

Food world on Cox Creek Parkway also has fresh ginger, but not as good as Marilyn's.

I certainly hope not Smiler It is the desire of my heart to have a good quality grocery store to shop at. I don't mind shopping at Walmart because they do carry a huge assortment of groceries that I use throughout the year, i.e. parmigiano reggiano, Matzo bread, plaintains, turkey sausage, etc. However I would for once like to GROCERY shop in the store where I don't have to compete with 300 other individuals because they're shopping for tires, glasses, plants, soil, grills, treadmills, fish, family photos, haircuts...lol...Of course I am being facetious but this is what I get at Wal-mart. I have to do grocery shopping in a Mall. Besides that Walmart if very limited in carrying Organic foods. We as humans need to take notice of what we put into our bodies. So yes, I am thrilled that I can buy fresh pizza dough at Publix that'll contain only water, flour, egg, and oil. I am so over eating stuff that has ingredients that I can't pronounce let alone recognize.

Anyway, It don't think Publix is for the uppity. It truly depends on the location of the store. I just hope it does well. I have been asking God to send either a Publix or Whole Foods to this area since I moved here 4 yrs ago.

My goodness! If we a Dunkin Donuts...I may never move Smiler

Yes, I have lived in 5 other cities larger than Florence. And each neighborhood had its own local store. Maybe I'm just different than some of you. I just can't get that excited about a new grocery store. It's not worth the Big O.

And yes, it is not very convenient to live in Petersville/Underwood/North Florence and drive out to the Walmart/new Publix area when you have 10 traffic lights to endure and 100 idiots on the road. Granted, I will gladly make the trip for something special, but, as I said, why make that drive to save 10 cents on an item when I have three convenient grocery stores within 2 miles of my house?

PS: I like to walk and ride my bicycle to them, also.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with people being excited about a new business coming into Florence that will provide some jobs as well as another option for shoppers.

I live in an area where I have a Super Walmart, a Super Target, a Kroger, a Schnucks (similar to Publix as far as pricing and exceptional deli/produce) and a Sav-A-Lot all within a 10 minute drive. I patronize all these stores, but for different items. I do the bulk of my grocery shopping at Schnucks, but if I want cleaning supplies or diapers, it's off to Walmart I go. Kroger usually has excellent sales on Cokes and meat, so if I need those items, I go there. It's nice to have options, and hopefully people will not resort to class warfare over some Boarshead meat vs. Sams Choice cola.

That being said, Publix does have a very good coupon policy, they let you combine manufacturer's coupons with store coupons, even on BOGO items. That will help the coupon clippers out there!

Happy shopping, Florence! And have some of the smoked almond and tarragon chicken salad for me. I used to LIVE on that stuff!

Big Grin
The property where they're going to build Publix just doesn't seem to be large enough for everything the article stated, & to have a decent sized parking area.

From the TD article:
"Publix will be the anchor store in a new shopping complex that will be built on the site of the present Books-A-Million and Hibbett Sporting Goods location at the intersection of Cox Creek Parkway and Hough Road. A map filed in February with the city Planning Commission indicates the present structure will be demolished and a new complex built. Books-A-Million and Hibbett will be a part of the new complex, as well as an as-yet unnamed store. A portion of the parking lot next to Cox Creek Parkway could be used to build a restaurant.

The largest store in the new complex will be 54,340 square feet".
Like Earth Momma said, you can buy sesame oil at The Oriental Pearl on east Tennessee St. They are still open, and have really good prices on things. I have to admit , I am Excited about Publix! But I am sure it will be just one more store added to the mix, I usually buy the bulk of groceries at Wal mart only because of prices. I have noticed that every time I go, it seems something I like is no longer available.

Yeah, like a positive, relaxed shopping experience.
