They're training new employees in Athens and Huntsville stores.  It's opening 12/12/12.  Let me say they're not just training them, but they're indoctrinating new employees into the way the Big Green does business.  Publix employees are carefully screened, drug tested and their criminal records checked.  They're also higher paid than in other groceries, so Publix demands excellence.

Don't expect bargain prices, but sale items are okay.  They have an exceptional deli that does a big, big business in deli sandwiches.  Their bakery is also exceptional.

I just cannot wait to see all the Food Stamp people buying all their luxury foods--something previously unavailable in The Shoals.  I will continue to shop at Aldi first, then Big Star/Foodland's sale items and at WalMart for Pancho's cheese dip.  I'll hit Publix for White Mountain Bread, fresh pizza dough, superior quality doughnuts and fantastic deli sandwiches.

We'll see you there.

I was in a Publix yesterday and got some White Mountain Bread on sale.  Eat yer heart out.

I just don't understand why WalMart's putting in a stand alone food store and another SuperCenter so close together.  There again, I've never seen WalMart wrong about socio-economics of a retail market.

When any food store moves into an area, they do better having numerous stores for logistics purposes.  Publix needs to build a store in Muscle Shoals as soon as they get the Florence store up and going.

The food industry is very stable.  When a new food store comes in, they're taking sales from another food store.  And the markups generally suck.  It doesn't take long to screwup the whole grocery market when three big new stores come into a market. The only thing I can see is that they're also going after the well-heeled of Colbert County--and the Food Stamp people that don't care so much about food prices.

Thankfully these stores are not inexpensive entries into our retail market, as they're both very expensive food stores.  I'm hopeful our Big Stars won't be so effected.

Saturday Morning @ Publix:  Too many people asking you "How are you this morning?"

Well, I'm great, and would be better if I didn't have to say I'm great 50 times.

My problem with the store is that they scrunched the gondolas too close together.  The aisles are so close that you can hardly get past the other shoppers, much less while dealing with a bunch of old people rubber necking and not moving anywhere. I couldn't get over their produce section actually having fresh vegetables--something other stores have little of.  And the wine department is huge.  High beer prices have turned me into a tee-totaler.  Maybe they have some cheaper wines that'll satisfy?

I'll be sticking with Aldi's for my first stop, Big Star for meats and sale items, and Publix for pizza dough and White Mountain Bread when I have plenty of $.  WalMart will be reserved for specialty items, like Panchos cheese dip and a few of their housebrand items.

I'm figuring it will die down will the newness wears off.

The fresh veggies and the help from there staff really impressed me. It really blowed my mind when they took my products out of the cart and actually wheeled it to my car(that don't happen anymore). Some one told me its not like your big box store that you are used to. Come to find out today it is employee owned. I will definitely be going back.

I along with bamaman, I   will stick with big star meat. Publix meat does look good and ranked 100% USDA(American Beef) and at respectable price.  Walmart  charges a little less on beef(ranked 100% USDA Mexican allowed meat) blame NAFTA)).

I haven't tried the bread or solo lunches yet but I'll definitely i give them my business before I think about walmarket again.
