Went by this morning with the coupon from the paper. And yes!!!! I got pancake syrup for 1 penny! Now for those who complain about having someone take your groceries out for you just be happy . For 1 this makes the carts last longer and ride easier. 2. It makes your car safer because of no rolling buggies hitting your car and also provides extra security in the parking lot from hoodlums and thugs this time of year. All in all Publix is the real deal and a much better choice than Wal-Mart.

I'll always start at Aldi's and then go to Big Star for sale items and meat.  I use Wal Mart for a few of their house brands and Panchos cheese dip.  Then, it's on to Publix for White Mountain Bread and deli made pizza dough.

Notice who's on the end of the list.  Most of the sale items in the circular today were pretty good, however.  I went to Publix Saturday, and got pretty frustrated with all the rubber neckers clogging up their extremely narrow aisles.  The store should have been 25% larger in footprint for that many gondolas.

it is interesting how people who can afford to buy things still buy cheap and don't support jobs. used to be all grocery stores had someone helping with bags. however people want to make good money yet don't want to contribute to someone having a job. I pay extra for service and thank those companies for giving jobs. Sure you save money at Walmart, however they don't pay employees well or give benifits to many of their employees. All while Sam's kids get richer

What's amusing is to see someone go thru a store like Publix with a cart full of truly luxury foods--and pay with food stamps.  Such luxury foods have not been available in quite sometime in this food market.   I would never purchase such items, as I have a strong opinion of the value of MY dollar.

And to think that all those fantastic deli sandwiches can be paid for by The State  Wow!.

MountainMan's eyesight is better than mine!  LOL! There are several ways to assume EBT cards are being used.  I do not know my accuracy rate or reasons for assumptions. EM is through with this topic. I have not been to Publix yet and enjoy everyone's reports.  I am a big fan of Atlanta area Publix stores so I am not in too big a hurry.

I can understand the feelings about seeing EBT cards being used for premium items and for things that are not perceived as essential but I can't blame a person for wanting to shop at a store as nice as Publix stores are.  I became acquainted with Publix first on Vacations to Florida and then when I lived in the Atlanta area.  The only other store that I ever saw that was as nice and quality as Publix was a locally, private, owned store called Scotts in Fort Wayne, IN but then Scott's has been taken over since the years that I knew them.  It's a transition that is similar to when Service Merchandise acquired Ellmans stores in Atlanta (if anyone remembers them).  Also similar to K-Mart taking over Sears (hopefully not though).

I'm glad to see Publix in our area because I fully believe that it will prompt the others to pick up their game.  I'm very enthused to see many offerings that just were available in the area before.  One only has to look over the Pasta Sauces to realize that there are some really special and unique offerings which weren't available before.  Yes  some are much more expensive but then, like with Mid's Meat Pasta sauce or Shaw's Crab cakes, they are worth it for they are exceptional and not available in this area before Publix.  I also love the Publix branded items for the quality is also much higher (or I think so) than some of the generic store offerings at other stores. Yes Publix, overall, is a bit higher but with many of their items you do get what you pay for and it is worth more.  Sometimes a few dollars or cents more on some items, every now and again, let's you know you are worth it.

I hope Publix continues to do good in this market and so much so that they can justify a Muscle Shoals location as well.  They also seem to be a good outfit to work for and the people that work there, although yes non-union, seem to appreciate the Publix ownership and like working there and in turn make you feel legitimately welcome and like they are glad you are there.

Publix should do well, but they need to a second store (across the river) to make the logistics work.  The grocery business is as big a transportation business as they are a selling business.

Publix is predominantly employee owned corporation, and they're pretty stable in stock price from year to year.  Being an owner keeps the unions out, and it doesn't hurt that their workers are higher paid than the competition.

I  too lived in the Atlanta area for 11 years, and had Publix and Ingles stores closeby.  But like I said earlier, I'll continue to first shop @ Aldi's, hit Big Star for sale items and meat and use WalMart for a few select items only they have.  Then, I'll hit Publix for the bakery and deli.  And, WalMart is not a discount food operation in any way.

I had shopped at Publix a few times in Tuscaloosa and had been to the one in Decatur and have always liked the store, I visited the one in Florence both yesterday morning and the day before and I was highly impressed with the level of service. There are a lot of stores where the staff will ask if you are finding everything OK or at the checkout will ask if you found everything but when you tell them what you're looking for it's either they have it or they don't, my response at Publix both days was much different, they actually looked for and found a solution and I am now hooked to be regular customer there.

As for the seafood market, I do wish that they offered a little more but the Killen location of Foodland is hard to beat when it comes to seafood selection but I did notice that Publix had fresh (well at least not frozen) squid and that is something I have not seen at other places.

I just wish the employees would quit asking "How are you doing?"

Well, I'm doing great.  But please quit asking me the same question 50 times every visit.  I don't want to have to be that nice on every aisle.  A simple "good morning" is all that's needed.

And, I'm very capable of carrying out a 1 bag, 2 pound plastic bag to my car.

I don't get you people.  You complained, b **tched, and moaned about not having a Publix in Florence.  Now you have one.  Yet that's not good enough for you.   Now you're whining about how polite and helpful the employees are.  Are you guys not satisfied with anything?  Would a simple smile and a "I'm doing well, thank you for asking!"  be too much for you?  I know what a horrid experience it must be to have someone want to actualy help you with your bags, but could you be a little more civil?  These employees are doing their job...why don't you guys appreciate that?  Man...!!

I've learned you just can't please some people no matter what you do. Good post.

I'm thinking you should stick with Wal-Mart.  You will be happier there.

I was just thinking about how many times a day someone, not just employees in a store, nod at me and other people and ask, "how are you today"? Dang it, I'm even guilty of doing that myself. Standing in line, or yes, walking around in a store, there's always those "jerks" that say, "how are you doing today" or some other polite acknowledgement.  I guess the answer is "body language". Just keep your eyes down, body rigid, don't make eye contact with anyone, and IF you do it accidentally, snarl at them so they know you aren't going to put up with any of those "pleasantries". Make them understand this is 2012, almost 2013, and manners and courtesy have no place in our society. We've already done away with "please", and "thank you" is almost gone too, so can getting rid of "how are you" or "have a good day" be that far behind? Not if we just make an extra effort to not use those phrases.

LOL!

I always like George Carlin's responses to stuff like that, such as "moderately neato", or "I'm not unwell!"

-----Hit 'em low and sideways-----

I love the place. They have Purina(tm) Yankee Chow!

You could always pretend to have laryngitis. LOL

We had the prime rib advertised in circular for Christmas dinner.  Medium rare- and cut like butter!  Craig told butcher the two in the counter were not to his liking and the entire leg (whatever?) was brought out for his selection, cut, and trimmed to his specifications.  This was in Gwinnet Cty ,Ga and just shows an example of the service and meat quality)  Roasted asparagus, with fresh grated parmesan and oven roasted potatoes completed the major portion of the meal.
