My daughter told me today that her boyfriend and his family have heard that the Publix store is now off.  Plans have been put on hold or cancelled for the location on Cox Creek Parkway at Hough road.  It was supposed to be connected to a riff between the Andersons and Publix but they didn't know what it was over.  I also saw in the paper today where WalMart is planning to put one of their dedicated food markets in the area behind the bowling lanes.

If true, and it possibly is because there is no activity going on at the site or at least no brick/block walls being erected so could be something has poisoned the deal.  In the same article, in the Times Daily, that revealed plans for a new WalMart SuperCenter on Cloverdale Road and the dedicated WalMart Food store on Florence Blvd it said that Publix was seeking a location in Muscle Shoals.  Makes me wonder if they are giving up on a Florence location for now or maybe they are going back to their first plans for Darby and Cox Creek Parkway vicinity.  Either way if the rumor is right and true it means a great delay to the opening of a new Publix for Florence.

"Again, that is an interesting strategy but could be part of the company’s plan to compete against Publix Super Market, which is under construction at Renaissance City Center across from Regency Square Mall. Publix should be open by the spring. Hibbett Sporting Goods and Books-A-Million also are part of the complex, and Panera Bread is expected to open in a stand-alone parcel at the center."

Do you know where that info came from to the boyfriend? When I was by there a few days ago Construction was still going on at the Publix building site.

I am reliably informed by my second cousin's hairdresser's boyfriend's yard man that the building will no longer house a Publix.  Instead, he confidently advises, it will house the world's largest Hooters!

Reminds of the rumor a decade ago that Target was pulling out because the air conditioning install accident that happened during construction. Or the one a few years after that they were going to close because they weren't meeting sales projections.  If anything it seems to back the counter rumor that was going on for both of the previous rumors that it was someone from Wal-Mart starting them, especially since the super center on Cloverdale Rd rumor started up again.    That one's been going around since the late 90s...

Anyone who has followed these forums and my comments on Publix will know I as much as anyone else wants to see Publix here.  I more than anyone hope that the rumor is just that and false for I want to see Publix come to the area as it was, and remains, my favorite grocery store.  I don't know where they got that from and given that so much money is usually invested in contracts, lawyers and everything else it would not make sense that it would be nixed over some disagreement but she was pretty adamant that the rumor was right so thought I would put it out there to see if anyone else had heard anything similar.

As an update while having my truck's oil changed I was talking with another customer who happened to work for the Anderson Company (BAM) and I inquired if Publix was still on course to build adjacent to the new Books a Million.  He said that as far as he knew it was with no problems that he knew of.

As for the question regarding the source of my daughter's boyfriend's information.  She just said that it was something that his parents were told.  In retrospect I should not have mentioned it but the reason I did was to see if anyone else might have heard something regarding it.  For my part I hope not only to see Publix in Florence but in Muscle Shoals as well.  I would love to see WalMart do good with their grocery market store as well or a Whole Foods.  I'm all for growth in the Shoals area meaning more jobs for those that need it and an improved quality of life for all of the Shoals residents, at least I hope it would work out that way.

I agree that we need a really good quality high line grocery.  It's bad when you drool when you go into the Kroger in Corinth.

As far as Publix, their bakery and deli especially do a slam great job.  The quality of their people are superior to other groceries, which is an indication they pay higher wages.

But, a single stand alone grocery store cannot be profitable, as the grocery business is a logistics business.  Publix will have to have another store in the area (Colbert) to minimize/share trucking costs.

Panera Bread is the correct name.

Some of you who are not familiar with Publix will find them a bit pricey, but you will also find a much greater variety of merchandise than at Walmart. Their produce sections are superior to anything now in the Shoals.  Likewise their meat market.  Publix's house brands are generally very good. Also, they have good sales on many items, so watch for those and take advantage of them.  A shrewd shopper would not do all his/her grocery shopping on one store.

After I posted the initial post under this topic and given some additional information that came from external sources as well as the comments within this forum I have concluded that whatever my daughter had heard must have had no valid basis.  I fully believe that the Publix project is still well under way.  As for the hair salon or yogurt shop I haven't heard either of those but would not think it would be out of place.  I'd still like to see a Firehouse Subs come to town but guess that will have to be another location.

Now about that "World's Largest Hooters" if it's not going to be at the original location now that it seems Publix has once again rooted the Hooters out. Can you'll check with the unemployed pool boy, who told the yard man, who let it slip to the hair dresser, who dropped it on her ex-boyfriend, who confide with the Condedah's  second cuzzin, if we could have that in the Cloverdale Super Center Wal-Mart complex ? Heck I don't care if they bring in a load of Asian cuties on that boat load of Made in China merchandise......

So now Publix is the "Hooter rooters"?  Can't doubt your report, though, considering the assemblage of unimpeachable sources you have there!

My daughter just returned from the Publix store in Athens, and brought me a hot loaf of White Mountain Bread.  Yuuum!

The store employees said the Florence Publix was going to be built in stage two of the current building project.  They said it's expected to be open by 10/12.  Numerous employees told the same thing to my daughter.

Sorry it's not sooner.

Well, inventor2012, we will welcome you to the Shoals.  I was born here 70+ years ago and have enjoyed my life here.  You could not have chosen a better place to call home.  I have seen my children and my grandchildren grow up here and they have become happy, well adjusted, successful adults.  Making it a good place to live depends on your priorities in life.  Publix and probably many others attractions will be ready when you arrive.

Hey, I'm here for the incredible lakes, low cost of housing, and ridiculously low property taxes.

I just made a pizza with fresh dough from the Athens Publix deli.  It was absolutely incredible.  I cannot tell you the enjoyment that some of the items from Publix will give you--like the subway sandwiches.

But, they're expensive.

Publix is on the expensive side but as others have mentioned-they have great sales.  For those of you in the Shoals who coupon, Publix will be heaven for you!  On an average week, I spend around $20 for around $100 worth of groceries at Publix.  It takes around 30-45 minutes of pre-planning the night before & I am in/out of the store in around 20 minutes.

I hope they build in Florence.  The quality & service they provide should have Wal-Mart scared!

They're already building in Florence. Word is that they will open around May-June of this year.

I should clarify....I hope the construction continues & they don't pull out (as some rumors have indicated).

Firedancer:  You ought to get your own column in the Times Daily to teach frugal living.  We really get few coupons in the Times Daily Sunday newspaper, but so many coupons are now available online.

You could be like the Tennessean.com's Mrs. Cheap, who opens the eyes of Middle Tennesseans to the bargains available to one and all.

Bamaman1: I wish I could take the credit for my savings but, honestly, I just follow directions well!  I read a couple of local couponing blogs and do what they say to do!  I prefer to follow the local blogs rather than the bigger, national blogs because the ads don't vary too much, we actually have the stores mentioned, and the coupons listed are regional to our area.

They offer couponing classes at K's Cove in Rogersville once a month. For those with a large family and time to cook, coupons rock. For households of one (or three where two have a total of eight legs), some coupons just aren't practical...and neither is cooking a recipe for four. You can lose much money that way. I'll probably frequent the Publix Deli.
