Look on the back of the current title. There is a place there for the owner to transfer the title to the new owner. Just ask him to fill that out and take it to the probate judge's office.
Call the courthouse and ask. You wont have to give your name. Don't put $1.00 on the bill of sale, it looks fishy and the courthouse folks may ask you about it. There is a procedure and paperwork for when a car is given as a gift, I just cant remember if you have to be a family member to keep it tax free......
Need I ask or should I let my imagination wander.......
Seriously, though, my dad gifted me a truck once, I had to get a form filled out and notorized. They specifically said not to use the $1.00. That was Lauderdale county 10 years ago, I dont know how they do it in Colbert.
I think it depends on which person you get at the counter. My dad gave me a car about 13 or so years ago. We went to the court house together, thank heavens. The gal made a big stink about it so I handed my dad a $10 bill right in front of the woman. She was PISSED OFF, but she transferred the title. It had something to do with them not making any tax money because you are taxed based on the price you pay for the car.
Here's a good one for ya. Just yesterday I went to get an old truck that's been on blocks being restored for the past five years tagged. The title has been in my name for the past five years so I just needed to tag it as it is now road ready again. I took the plate from a car we had sold with me to use as it is still good until July, 2011. I didn't have a bill of sale with me on the car that was SOLD so I had to purchase a new plate. Go figure!
