How is the best way to go about registering a vehicle in my name when the car has been given to me?

Does it still apply that the original owner sell you the car for a dollar?

I think it depends on which person you get at the counter. My dad gave me a car about 13 or so years ago. We went to the court house together, thank heavens. The gal made a big stink about it so I handed my dad a $10 bill right in front of the woman. She was PISSED OFF, but she transferred the title. Big Grin It had something to do with them not making any tax money because you are taxed based on the price you pay for the car.
Here's a good one for ya. Just yesterday I went to get an old truck that's been on blocks being restored for the past five years tagged. The title has been in my name for the past five years so I just needed to tag it as it is now road ready again. I took the plate from a car we had sold with me to use as it is still good until July, 2011. I didn't have a bill of sale with me on the car that was SOLD so I had to purchase a new plate. Go figure!
