Has the race card not been used enough?

Obama speaks of 'overcoming adversity' while speaking at a "historically BLACK school".

She should be looking to the future, not looking backwards. She should be teaching black men to be fathers, not pant dragging thugs.

She should be teaching black girls to respect their bodies and not become mothers when they are still children themselves.

The inner city black culture is your main enemy, not the white man.

Please don't revert this country to a third world status with your racist, hating ways.

What was the racist part? Why did you place historically BLACK school in quotes? Why place black in caps?
I'll take a stab at that. He is saying the black culture is it's own worse enemy - not his enemy.

The culture values the wrong things. In that video of the little girl cussing I posted the other day you see a 4 or 5 year old (if that) saying she rides on MFing 40s (rims). If kids were raised with a value for education as opposed to the street culture no doubt they would have a better shot at a future.

No serious person is ever going to give you a shot if you use expression like who dat is?, where he go?, or he my baby daddy. I don't make you sound stupid - you do.

The black community has many solid citizens, but is cursed with a substantial underclass that places little or no value on education, common courtesy, lawful behavior, or mutual respect (although many of them are quick to characterize any criticism of their distorted world view as "dissin'" or disrespect). Trouble is, that element does not even respect themselves. They are a drag on the many black citizens who work hard, behave themselves, and are a credit to their communities.

Why do you consider it 'taboo' to speak of blacks?

The racist part? Lets see, The first lady should represent ALL Americans, not just the black ones.

Taboo??? I simply asked a question that have failed to answer.

Again where is the racism?

How is she representing only black Americans? To me, most of her adult life (18 and up) has been surrounded by mostly white Americans.
I did not vote for Obama. He just was not my choice. However, my post bear out that I pledged to support the Elected President just like I thought you should. Having said that, Now the picture has changed. His appointees are a mixed bag of misfits and tax dodgers and under achieving people. They include Barney, Sen Dodd, Pelosi, Reid and several others. I don't respect none of them including the President or the idiot missing from the village
Joe B. I had hoped for better, it did not happen. Now we wait for something different. Please don't assume that because I don't support him means I am a racist. I am an American, parent, Grandparent, Voter and Honest Citizen. Let me know when someone measures up and can handle the job. Thank you

This isn't just a problem with young Blacks. The white young community is as much an embarrassment to me for the same reasons. Nobody speaks properly anymore, everybody is "hooking up", boys show no respect for girls and the girls don't seem to mind being treated like crap. The young people today are sloppy, lazy, and don't care about anything beyond what's going on this weekend. Wow. I can't believe I'm hearing myself say these things. When did I get old?

PWS...why are you begging someone to not think you are racist?
WH,
Probably, because anytime anyone speaks of anything regarding race, people have been indoctrinated into making snap judgments about the speaker's attitudes toward those of a different color. No one, regardless of color, is given credit for being able to speak objectively about race. I think we all need to aspire to assess individuals, not groups, regarding actions. I hope this doesn't sound like a sociology class, but, to me, the topic that started this thread is really about a culture and not a color. There are really a lot of intelligent, pleasant, and socially-adept folks out there, who happen to be a different color than most. We will only continue to advance as a country when we are able to judge the heart and soul, and not the pigmentation of the skin.

I'm assuming he did so to point out the racial aspect of a school being for blacks only. You can't have a school for just white people. White segregation is bad but it's okay for blacks?
Why do people think the school is only for blacks?

Obviously some don't know what Historically Black College or University (HBCU) means. It does not mean only blacks can attend there. Historically blacks have been the major recipients of education there.

White people and other races attend HBUC's. In fact West Virginia State University and Bluefield State College, both HBCU's have a majority white student population.

So if anyone wants to blame anyone for the existence of HBCU's they need to blame the southern leaders of the past.

Again it was a HBCU that was the first integrated college/university in Alabama.

I stand by what I said, I am not begging any person of any origin to believe anything any different. If I was a racist you would have known it quickly. I have worked with, lived with, worked for and been associated with several groups (Races for you dummies) all of my life and I have no bias toward any. You are very small in mind to even read that into what I stated. Have a Great Day!

The President is not the subject. Liking or approving the current President's politics/policy/cabinet issues was never on the agenda at graduation. Why bring up the speech at all? Whether you are adressing approval or disapproval of a person, a race, a club, organization, whatever ~ it should have been posted under an appropriate topic.

kkelly--never underestimate the propensity of terminally right wing dingbats to find something to beetch about in anything--and I mean ANYTHING--Barack Obama or Michele Obama say or do.
The fact that we are even having this discussion means that racism is right under the skin..no pun intended....when it comes to race we wear our feelings on our sleeves....which means we are defensive about it...we don't want to be construed as racist, yet it is difficult to understand something we do not know...our cultures remain so different, and yet we live together...I think that says a lot for itself...as for the kids of today, we have told them that they are the best things that ever happened to us, and they have gotten to believing it...they are sloppy, lazy, have no self-motivation, and feel entitled...and those are the good parts...

Lets summarize...

The first lady gave an impassioned speech to 270 graduates of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff that referenced the legacy of their historically black school, which opened in 1873 with seven students, most of whom could barely read.

Obama said those first students, only a decade removed from slavery , had no guarantee of opportunity once they graduated.

King's Arkansas speech came a year after federal troops protected nine black students attending all-white Little Rock Central High School. Michelle Obama's speech came more than a year after the university's 260-piece band marched in the inaugural parade for her husband, the nation's first black president.

People in the audience said they hope her appearance draws more attention to historically black colleges.

Graham said students from across the country seek out his university because they want to attend a traditionally black college. The band has students from as far as California and Florida as well as neighboring states, he said.

Seems pretty much black to me.

I did mis-state that line and I apologize. I meant to say that because I do not support him does not mean I am a racist. His race or yours has nothing to do with my opinion. I hope you get what I meant to say.

Its just that it seems to me you are parts of the status quo that has fallen into the black offense claims.

They holler, you jump. I couldn't care less what anyone thinks of my opinion, black, hispanic, white...it doesn't matter. You won't hear any disclaimers from me. I bet you don't throw up any disclaimers except to the blacks either do you?

Again you must not know or refuse to acknowledge what Historically Black College or University means.

How can you twist saying students were denied a high school because they were black, as being racist?

....the nation's first black president. It was not black people that created the one drop rule.
I fail to see what the problem is. Mrs. Obama was the speaker at the graduation, not the writer of the article. Also, she is speaking at a college graduation....not a group of young pre-teens or teenagers that need a sex education lesson or be warned about the dangers of drugs. I am sure she has spoken to younger groups in the past, but it is hardly the topic to discuss at a college graduation. Speaking about the growth of a college throughout the years and the success of its graduates seems like the right conversation to be having during a speech.
At least Obama spoke the truth.

quote:
The president said improving educational opportunity is especially crucial for young black and Hispanic Americans. He noted statistics that show as a group, they are being outperformed by their white classmates. "All of us have a responsibility as Americans to change this; to offer every single child in this country an education that will make them competitive in our knowledge economy. That is our obligation as a nation," he said.

Does anyone have a link where either of the Obamas have spoke at other than a black college?

All I get is them baiting racism...

wonder how he will slip 'slavery' and 'black' into those?
Slavery has been with the world from almost the beginning, most likely as long as prostitution. First of all Slavery is and was wrong however usually when slavery is mentioned it's the What American Man that gets most of the blame for it existing. Slaves were sold originally by other Blacks in Africa and made their way to America. Racism unfortunately is alive and well today just as it has for many years. Racism also is not just of white American men but rather you will find just as many Black men or Mexican men or Asian men racist. The best we can do to fight racism is to attempt to look at every other person as God does which is as another created spirit (spirit within) in a human body that happens to be different than ours but that inner spirit is the same in all of us for there is no sex, race, or nationality of that inner spirit. Only then will we look at our fellow brother or neighbor as an equal and without prejudice.

My father lived in a time, different than today and I heard him use the "n-word" many times in life but never did he ever think twice about it and never did he ever use it in a negative manner. I doubt he ever thought twice about it being offensive to anyone but I dare say and truly believe he would have stopped saying it had he known how it was received by his fellow man. I do know my father was a very religious man, a Christian man, and I honestly believe he was never a racist man based upon his talks with me or everything I ever saw yet anyone that heard him speak the word would have assumed differently.

Even though I am white I do know racism for I have been on the receiving end of being treated differently just because I was white and was in an environment where my race was a minority. I guess the best cure for racism is "forgiveness" and understanding.

The absolute truth and the best post I've read in weeks!!!
Not to mention that slavery goes on today, in certain parts of the world. In fact I doubt slavery has ever totally ceased over the whole world. I just saw a news article posted in the internet about North Korean women being sold into slavery as they crossed the North Korean boarder with China. Chinese men would pay off North Korean guards to allow the women to pass over and then grab them when they do. Other parts of Southeast Asia and the Orient also have slave labor camps as well as parts of China. Then if you look at some of the strict Islamic laws that some women live under some could say that they were forced to live as slaves to their men.

I know that slavery is a very touch issue in America, with regards to Black Americans, however in most discussions, regarding slavery of Black Americans, I hear very little or nothing about the fact that many white americans shed blood and fought for slavery to be abolished and to enable equal rights. Most of what I hear today is as if slavery in America still exist and I just don't know where all that anger comes from. Yes some people are racist but no color or race has a patient on racism.
