Sputnik did!

Sarah Palin, in an interview with Fox News' Greta van Susteren, was asked about the President's reference to the Sputnik era of space exploration. Exuding confidence, with her usual authoritarian air, the Wacko of Wasilla proceeded to identify the high costs of space exploration as the factor that brought down the economy of the USSR and caused its collapse.

Of course that is contrary to the usual doctrine on the downfall of the USSR, namely that Reagan, by vastly expanding our military, drove the USSR to spend more to catch up than they could afford. Others contend that this was not the case, that the heavy defense spending in the Reagan era was based on the Pentagon's grossly exaggerated estimates of Soviet capabilities. (See Thomas Gervasi "Soviet Military Power")and that the Soviet collapse would have happened anyway. See also http://www.registan.net/index....viet-union-collapse/

Whatever the cause of the collapse of the Soviet Union, it clearly was NOT the space race. Sputnik went up in 1957! The final collapse of the USSR did not happen until over 30 years later.

Palin's perky and confident "answer" was wrong, incorrect, inane, goofy, and otherwise in the style of Sarah Palin!

I don't either. I saw the Palin gaffe on MSNBC, where they ran an excerpt from the van Susteren interview. Fox just provided the kick-off; this latest episode of the never-ending Palin Follies will see lots of continued exposure outside of Fox. But thanks to Fox for helping--however unintentionally--to add one more item to the huge pile of incontrovertible evidence of Palin's doltishness!

I see, the MSNBC recycles the news stories from Fox. LOL

I guess without Olbermann, they are desperate.
I don't really understand the obsession with Palin.

She's not in any political office. She doesn't pass any legislation, she doesn't make any executive orders. She simply writes books, she gives a few speeches, and does a few TV interviews.

Big deal.

I just don't get the fascination with her. It's making her a lot of money, but she really has no impact on my life at all.

So why worry about her mistakes?

Torsten Silz/Getty ImagesApril 4, 2009: In response to a question asking what he learned from European leaders, Obama responds, "It was ... interesting to see that political interaction in Europe is not that different from the United States Senate. There's a lot of -- I don't know what the term is in Austrian -- wheeling and dealing ...

April 2, 2009: In what might be the worst possible moment of his young administration, Obama clearly bows before King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. When queried about the bow later that day in Strasbourg, France, Obama says, "We have to change our behavior in showing the Muslim world greater respect." A week later, after apparently being alerted that the only people who bow before the king are his subjects -- not his peers -- the administration's official line on the bow changes, and White House spokespeople say the president was merely stooping to shake hands with the much-shorter king. This lame excuse irks even the most biased members of the fawning press, who can clearly see the deep bow the president makes in subsequent video clips.

And we could go on and on and on. But demos are more worried about others than the incompetent in the white house.

and this post explains why I poke jokes at beter about Palin and Beck. NEITHER of them have any legeslative or policy making power. I can complain about King Barry and crew because they are actually passing bills that are damaging to mine, and my fellow citizens way of life. If you don't like Palin or Beck...don't watch them on TV and don't buy their books. It's that simple.

Great point. The leftist loonies still complain about Bush and he is staying in Texas and out of the fray.Heck, they still get their diapers in a bunch over Reagan, and he is dead.

Thanks. That is a great book, and they did a good job of trying to stay close to the book in the movie. I've worn out 4 or 5 copies of that book. I read it the first time when I was 11 or 12, and have read it several times a year since then.

I know; he portrays Gus's personality to a tee.
The die-hard true believers who actually think Palin has a brain and would be competent to be President desperately need to have information that will deflect them from these kinds of gross misconceptions. They are not likely to get it from Republicans, who fear that criticism of Palin will lose votes for them. Thus it befalls progressive to help enlighten these wretched dupes! As true patriots, we must protect this nation from enemies without and within!

So you believe a president whose knees bent and bowed down before Japenese and Arab presidents and has No military experience will protect us better? I don't think so!

Obama swapped “Iraq” for “Afghanistan” when he answered a question on YouTube about whether he still believes soldiers need to die in the wars there.

“As I said, we will be out of Afghanistan by the end of this year,” Obama said, a fairly significant misstatement of his administration’s Afghanistan policy, which doesn’t call for a troop withdrawal until 2014.

No teleprompter. LOL

I agree. I can't for the life of me understand why she has any following at all.
I do , however, wish the news media would ignore her, that screachey-whiney little voice of her's grates on what few nerves I have left, and I usually have to endure for a few seconds before I hit the mute button.
If we all were to practice one of the teachings of Zen, if we ignore her, she'll go away.

I make them all the time, but I'm not the President who is also Commander in Chief. If Bush had confused the two, you would have been ready to hang him.. heck, you were ready to hang him anyway for living.

beter... you do realize that YOU are the one having the constant conniption fit about Palin and Beck right?? Very few posters on this forum actually start threads devoted to their passionate belief that Palin would be the best person to be the prez. I know I havent. I have never once stated that I wanted her as the president, or even the vice president for that matter. Simply that I would take her over Obama or Biden anyday. But lesser of two evils votes don't count as "die-hard true believers" votes as you mentioned here.

Once again... YOU ARE THE ONE HERE OBSESSED WITH PALIN AND GLENN BECK!! No one comes close to matching that obsession beter... no one. lol

With Palin the gaffes are multitudinous! Google around and see for yourself.

As opposed to Obama, who keeps his SAT and college grades under seal! What is he hiding!
He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard Law School. That means he was in the top ten percent at a school that is VERY hard to get into. We've been through this before over here.

From Biography.com:

After high school, Obama studied at Occidental College in Los Angeles for two years. He then transferred to Columbia University in New York, graduating in 1983 with a degree in political science. After working in the business sector for two years, Obama moved to Chicago in 1985. There, he worked on the South Side as a community organizer for low-income residents in the Roseland and the Altgeld Gardens communities.

It was during this time that Obama, who said he "was not raised in a religious household," joined the Trinity United Church of Christ. He also visited relatives in Kenya, which included an emotional visit to the graves of his biological father and paternal grandfather. "For a long time I sat between the two graves and wept," Obama said. "I saw that my life in America—the black life, the white life, the sense of abandonment I felt as a boy, the frustration and hope I'd witnessed in Chicago—all of it was connected with this small plot of earth an ocean away."

Obama returned from Kenya with a sense of renewal, entering Harvard Law School in 1988. The next year, he met Michelle Robinson, an associate at Sidley & Austin law firm in Chicago. She was assigned to be Obama's adviser during a summer internship at the firm, and soon the couple began dating. In February 1990, Obama was elected the first African-American editor of the Harvard Law Review, and he graduated magna cum laude in 1991.

After law school, Obama returned to Chicago to practice as a civil rights lawyer, joining the firm of Miner, Barnhill & Galland. He also taught at the University of Chicago Law School, and helped organize voter registration drives during Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign. On October 3, 1992, he and Michelle were married. They moved to Kenwood, on Chicago's South Side, and welcomed two daughters: Malia (born 1998) and Sasha (born 2001).
