As incompetent as George W. Bush has been in his response to the disaster in New Orleans, he wasn't the one who began the process that inevitably led to that disaster spiraling out of control.

That would be Ronald Reagan.

It was Reagan who began the deliberate and intentional destruction of the United States of America when he famously cracked (and then incessantly repeated): "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'"

Reagan, like George W. Bush after him, failed to understand that when people come together into community, and then into nationhood, that they organize themselves to protect themselves from predators, both human and corporate, both domestic and foreign. This form of organization is called government.

But the Reagan/Bush ideologues don't "believe" in government, in anything other than a military and police capacity. Government should punish, they agree, but it should never nurture, protect, or defend individuals. Nurturing and protecting, they suggest, is the more appropriate role of religious institutions, private charities, families, and - perhaps most important - corporations.

Love it pba, and now the Governor of Kansas is being berated for worrying that if she needs just a little more equipment in the event of another tornado disaster in the next couple of weeks she will have to get it out of Iraq.

We are living a nightmare of incompetence and greed, and you get poked out for adding a comment to your own post.

I agree with your comment pba and I agree that it's OK to make a comment on an article you read and posted. We all have opinions and it's the reason we are on this Forum.

Reagan was no friend of working people. He turned his back on family farmers and allowed agribusiness to take their farms. He demonized unions and criticized the American worker as being too greedy when corporations took their jobs overseas to increase their profits. He then defended CEO's and corporations rights to make huge profits.

Corporate Globalization got it's start under Reagan with his "Global Free Trade Initiatives." He gave tax breaks and incentives for companies to close their manufacturing plants in America and move to Latin America. Bush Sr also.

He was called the "Teflon" President but it was because the media gave him a free ride. He was a made for TV populist. The corporate class wanted to replace FDR and government programs to help people with a Conservative who would allow them to exploit the worker again.
I have heard hundreds of times , how Great A speaker Mr Reagan was ,I just heard on the Birmingham Radio Station of the 5 Greatest Speaches & he may well have been a Great Speaker, someone else wrote it for him , as they do for all the Politictions , but remember he was an Actor First. I well never understand just because someone, can make a Great Speach , how would that make him a Great President, I do not vote on someones speaking ablity, 0ooooooops George W Bush , only Reason he got elected , oh wow look who was running against him. He couldn't even carrie his Home State, oh WoW !! what a Mess when that is what We Got Stuck with !! Baby Bush !
