the Original Coffee High School...
When I went there it was Appleby Jr. High School.

Yep, spent 7th, 8th, and 9th grade there. Interestingly, the original Jr. High building to the east was in worse condition and closed, even though it was newer.
BTW, it was named F. T. Appleby Junior High School. When Appleby and Gilbert consolidated, they named the street in front of Hibbett Appleby Boulevard.
This was an absolutely beautiful building. It is a shame that it was not turned into some sort of public facility insead of being torn down!
It was torn down following 3 arson fires, the last of which, during my 8th grade year there, left the older building unusable. We spent most of the time we were out of school moving classrooms into that newer building so we could complete our school year. It was Appleby's last as Hibbett opened the following year.
There were efforts in the years that followed to turn it into some sort of public use facility, but the gym had already been sold to Shoals School of Gymnastics, the older building was too badly damaged from the fires, and the newer building, as mentioned in a previous post, was not in good shape either. Add to that the UNA lobby (they REALLY wanted the property), and Appleby's days were part of history.

I loved Appleby. Rotating schedules were great as well as the 6th period mini-courses.
I return to th beautiful building! Consider why many American tourists flock to Europe! In Athens Greece there is a very small Greek Orthodox church tucked (literally) in among many multi-storied buildings. Nuff said.
