I'm really taking more thought in separating and sometimes picking through my garbage. Yes, it sounds strange, nasty but I'm much more happy! I now am down to 2 or less bags of the smelly stuff that my 5 person family produces and the rest in the recycle can.

I urge everyone in these forums and tell your neighbors to separate-separate-separate to make this world a better place!

I'm out in the country, too and I recycle. Just not quite like everyone else does.

Old cans make good muffler patches and pipe clamps.

Styrofoam and PETE plastic bottles chop up good to make good slush for poor man's napalm.

Aluminum foil and chopped aluminum cans make good anti-radar chaff if used correctly.

Ever need large fender washers to fix something?
Stack a couple of the ends of soup cans that the can opener cuts off together and drill a hole through them. Instant washer sandwich.

A paintbrush handle with the brush end cut off and a slot cut into that end and a hole drilled through the 'ears' with a cotter pin through the end off a can makes a pretty good pizza wheel. Dull the edges and you can use the same wheel to put that PITA rubber window screen retaining stuff back in like a pro to keep the bugs out.

A chunk of old bed frame drilled out and bent right with a small steel rod through it, a piece of automatic garage door linkage, a couple of collar clamps, a piece of old chain and a small carpenters' WonderBar(tm) twisted 90 degrees and drilled and ground out to fit a valve stem makes a wicked good valve spring compressor for changing camshafts/rockers/hydraulic lash adjusters on OHC engines.

An old portable drill stand with an air dryer from a compressor with the filter removed and filled with fuel injector cleaner on it, a piece of old 5/8" automotive heater hose, and a hose clamp hooked up to a portable air compressor and a momentary switch from an old video game and two alligator clips to hook up to your car battery makes an excellent tool for cleaning and testing your own car's fuel injectors, saving you the beaucoup bucks the shop gets to fire the same stuff thru them without taking them off of the engine to make sure they're even clean.
Cleanest injectors in the county for just the cost of the bottle or two of injector cleaner and an hour's work.

Old news papers make good auto body repair filler packing before ya slap on the Bondo.

I have done so much with so little for so long-I can pretty much do anything with nothing.
