I owe it to Backwoods. He has refreshed my memory of what it means to be a redneck.

I have my idea of what a redneck is, and it isn't pretty.

What's yours?

No Jeff Foxworthy jokes, please, I'm serious.

deep old buddy, i hate to break it to ya. but this place will burn down before it joins the 21st century. you have the majority of the free thinkers in the shoals on this forum with you. sorry friend, sometimes living here ain't pretty! Wink
some of us work hard to turn the term "redneck" into something more. something kin to southern. lol. it only takes one person to ruin that. sorry!
Not raised here but brought back to witness the diversity in this area. Raised in IL, lived in TN, FL, CA, LA, but brought back to the Shoals to be a part of this for some spiritual reason. Lessons we have to learn or maybe to teach others. By observing, the participant is changed. By participating, the observer is changed."

Have you ever read the Shoals Forum? Most of them fit my definition of rednecks. Like walking in to a redneck dive bar right before they headed over to the cross burning. I didn't go back. Backwoods is probably there by now.
I love living in the South but being socially left-leaning makes it somewhat difficult on the occasion. But not enough to leave. In fact I usually find it funny.

Where is this Shoals Forum? Please give me the link. Sounds interesting to me. I've been out of this area for 3 months and have missed out!

Well, I hate to tell you this, but calling other people rednecks and then saying something like the quote above sure sounds a lot like the pot calling the kettle black. Big Grin

She barks again.
lots of southerners consider themselves rednecks. the word has different meaning for some. i consider it to represent the southern life. beer drinkin, mud ridin, country music, and good times. you know "redneckin"! Big Grin
I can't say anything negative about rednecks.......I know for a fact the man I married is one.He is a great guy with a unique way of thinking and over the years his way of life has rubbed off on me.I can say this about him he is honest,a great father, showers daily, never complains about my cooking and a pretty good husband in all ways that matter(throw in the fact that he has finally quit dipping and he is darn near perfect). Ah heck...who am I kidding...I might be a redneck, too.

Sure am.With your wife on one arm and your mother on the other.
On "Wife Swap" a few weeks ago they had a family who lived in Kentucky (in the mountains, no less). They hunted raccoons (??) One of the kids (about 17 or 18 years old) got offended & said "I'm not a redneck....I'm a mountain man"! Big Grin (I loved it!)
Can anyone explain the difference?
Yep, proud to be a redneck there old fat one!
What I have to say about bigots ain't nice either.
So what do you say about just keeping our negative thought to ourselves?
DF,
You came from Surefield Dude. Now you live in the land of 'fruits and nuts', you calling the kettle black?
An old band I liked back in the 70s had a song that said it best.
I don't care for the pictures with this vidio, but here is the song "Redneck" by Pacific Gas and Electric. Link
Remember their singer was Black.

We have our own flavor of rednecks out here. Pretty much the same distribution of "fun" rednecks and "worthless" rednecks as anywhere else. Although, we have a much higher percentage of people who are useless but work very hard to appear differently than in the south. It's all marketing.

Don't like reading the Shoals Forum, then don't read it, guess you could say I am a redneck to, along with a lot of us.
