Just today I was given a candle by my boss. It is gardenia scented. I am allergic to gardenias (the scent gives me horrendous debilitating headaches). I will pass the candle on to an individual I know who loves the scent. And I never feel guilty about it... better to give it to someone who will use it than put it away in a closet/attic to never be seen again or toss it out. I've received gift baskets with various scented lotions, etc, and have often split them up and passed them on. In my opinion, once something is given to you it is yours to do with as you please. I would never risk hurting someone's feelings by giving away something I am pretty certain they would ask about during a visit to my house, but I think things like candles and scented lotions, are pretty safe to pass on. No on expects them to last forever. And if someone wants to pass on something I've given them, I don't think anything about it.... no hurt feelings or resentment at all on my part.
