Reuters reported over a week ago that the US may enter into formal talks with Iran. A regional Summit is scheduled for Egypt beginning tomorrow.

While in Egypt, Rice will also attend a meeting to launch the International Compact with Iraq, a reconstruction plan that provides financial, political and technical support to Baghdad in return for political, security and economic reforms.

Iran will attend the conference, and Sunday Rice said she may meet with Iranian diplomats on issues involving Iraq.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Sunday she might meet with Iran's foreign minister at an upcoming conference on stabilizing Iraq.

Rice said in television interviews that she would not rule out an "encounter" with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki at the conference of key powers, to be held May 3-4 in Egypt.

However, Rice said any discussions would center only on stabilizing Iraq and not broader U.S.-Iranian relations.

"This is not a (conference) about the United States and Iran," she said on the ABC network's "This Week" program. "This is a meeting about Iraq and about what Iraq's neighbors and interested parties can do to help stabilize the situation in Iraq."

U.S. officials have accused Iran of training and supplying weapons to Shi'ite militias in Iraq.

"What do we need to do?" Rice said. "It's quite obvious. Stop the flow of arms to foreign fighters. Stop the flow of foreign fighters across the borders."

We are in this hideous mess in the Middle East because we have been led into it through the machinations of the neoconservative warmongers who have worked for well over a decade to reconfigure this nation's foreign policy. The chief architects of this debacle are Richard Pearle, Paul Wolfowitz, Dick Cheney, and William Kristol. If that sounds strange, then I suggest that you go to any good search engine and plug in "Project for the New American Century." This is the neoconservative blueprint for a pro-active, aggressive, U.S. hegemony in the Middle East or just about anywhere else we decide our national interests might be served by military means. A core document of this movement can be read at http://www.newamericancentury.org/RebuildingAmericasDefenses.pdf

An underlying premise of this dastardly movement, which is now invalid due to the huge Bush budget deficits we now suffer is explained as follows:

<<<For the
first time since the late 1960s the federal
government is running a surplus. For most
of the 1990s, Congress and the White House
gave balancing the federal budget a higher
priority than funding national security. In
fact, to a significant degree, the budget was
balanced by a combination of increased tax
revenues and cuts in defense spending. The
surplus expected in federal revenues over
the next decade, however, removes any need
to hold defense spending to some
preconceived low level.>>>>

That expected surplus never happened, but these scheming weasels and their allies in the Bush administration disregarded that and have squandered huged amounts of our national treasure on the Iraq war, hugely increash=ing the national debt!

If you want to know more, read Michael Collins Piper's revealing book, "The High Priests of War," which reveals the history and motives of these empire-building, unholy apostles of the "New World Order."
