I don't feel the Bible is inerrant, too many translations over too much time and lack of cultural insight to usage of terms of the area.
The elders of the church would have been the most learned of the group and so asking them for help would have been to use their knowledge of many things including prayer but also beyond.
Most of the beginnings of our medical and scientific knowledge came from the monks and priests of long ago.

I remember once, when they had shows at the Florence Armory, a snake-handling preacher show came through. One of them was bitten by a rattler.

Unfortunately, God has not been in the South Carolina area recently. I know this for a fact because Sarena Williams thanked Jehovah (I assune that is God) for helping her win Wimbledon. Hopefully, he is back now.
