Religous Extremists Protest Soldiers' Funerals
The right wing built its power by embracing extremism, but surely those who still claim to be “compassionate conservatives” will publicly oppose this hate mongering:

The Phelps gang are wacko's, pure and simple.

I don't even call them "religious" either. I call them a nutcase.

They are all lawyers, the "Church" is actually related in one shape, form, or other, i.e. they are all related. Additionally, they are lawyers and know how to use the system. They want someone to take a pot-shot at them so they can sue.

No, I do not consider them a church or even right wing or left wing. I consider them out of the ball-park. They are an embarrassment and should be shunned.
Amazingly, your own link says they supported Al Gore/Bill Clinton campaign....when did they become Republicans?

This nutjob is not Democrat or Republican...he is only using the system to further his own campaign.

Were you in the booth with them at the last election? If not, you have no knowledge of how they voted.

As a matter of fact, their protesting the war dead to further their agenda seems a lot more like your multiple posts against the war than anything from the Republicans.

YOU NEED TO READ IT AGAIN!!Phelps is not affiliated with any major political parties or groups, his ideology is closer to those in the religious conservative community!!!!!!

Phelps has had some interaction with politics. In the early 1990s, Phelps and his WBC congregation openly campaigned for the Clinton-Gore ticket, stating that he believed the WBC could influence Vice President Al Gore to support an anti-gay agenda once in office. When the congregation observed that the opposite was true, Phelps and others openly protested the Clinton administration, even traveling to Iraq to support Saddam Hussein who was at the time the subject of attacks by the United States. When former Senator Albert Gore, Sr. passed away, Phelps protested the funeral, yelling at the Vice President "your dad's in Hell." Currently while Phelps is not affiliated with any major political parties or groups, his ideology is closer to those in the religious conservative community.

Well said and I agree, would it be fair to say that you got wacko's on both sides and the middle?

Yes, I read it...my statement is correct...that they supported a DEMOCRATIC party at one time. And, I'll quote myself:
This nutjob is not Democrat or Republican...he is only using the system to further his own campaign.

Furthermore, I'll stand by my statement that their actions in protesting dead soldiers seems a lot more like liberals than conservatives...willing to sacrifice any sanctified process to make their point..

I am becoming more and more a democrat every day... Republicans has hurt the working person so much it is unreal... I guess I am more liberal than not, and I think Bush/Cheney has achieved their agenda that they had when they went into office...

Things, like this article, is just a sad case of people doing things to "worship" the RICH!!!

Even 2 more years of REPUBLICANS in office is goint to make it to where the working person is going to be almost poverty level, I say ALMOST, because they dont WANT the working people to BE poverty level, if that happens, they would qualify for federal programs, so they will allow the working person to "hover" right above poverty level.

Bush and Cheney scare me, they really do, they have abused their power, and at OUR expense, and all the religious leaders who back him, is backing the WRONG BIBLE, ...

Yes, this is MY opinions, and I know there are many of you who disagree, and that is fine... I respect that... but please respect that I believe what I believe because I SEE it so much, it really hurts ones heart.
That article is simply trying to provide a link between conservatives and the nuts from Kansas. Obviously, it didn't work because anyone with common sense knows that those people are neither liberal or conservative. They are simply mentally ill. That article is the most blatant display of liberal propaganda I've seen yet. If you read that stuff and believe it, you're as brainwashed as the Westboro nuts.

I would expect you to disagree with it because you don't want people to know that these conservatives nuts vote republican and are from the far right. these people would not vote Liberal!!!

Fred Phelps is registered as a Democrat in Kansas. Why would a registered Democrat vote Republican? Since you say otherwise, please provide proof.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Phelps

"Phelps' stated political views and activities are primarily driven by his view that the United States of America is "A sodomite nation of flag-worshiping idolators."[24] Phelps' voting registration in Kansas is Democratic.[25]"

"Phelps supported Al Gore in the 1988 and 1992 Democratic Party primary elections.[30"

"Phelps has run in various Kansas Democratic Party primaries in Kansas five times, but has never won.

They tell you they're consevatives,so most consevatives vote republican,Right?
LOL! You would come closer to being one of those people than I.

Not true. Are you a Democrat? Phelps is a Democrat as well. Did you vote for Al Gore? Phelps supported Al Gore as well.

Once again pba, please provide proof to your claim that the Phelps vote Republican even though Fred Phelps is a registered Democrat and has supported other liberal Democrats such as Al Gore.

This is where you put up or shut up.

Who knows why Phelps decided to run in the democratic primaries? His views are anything but "democratic." He got no where. Maybe he was trying to push the democrats in Kansas more to the right? states in the south, very little separate republican and democrats. We would have to look further into each race to see who he ran against and why. the democrats in the south are Conservative not liberal!!

The anti gay marriage vote was what Bush and Cheney used to "rally their support." Also against a women's right to chose an abortion. These are not democratic issues but rather ones that Conservative's,Republican's& Phelps' supports.

He blamed the death of US soldiers in Iraq, not on the results of lies and an illegal war but on God's punishment on America for allowing tolerance of Gay and Lesbians. That's not anti war.

It's nice to at least see the Conservative republicans disavow such a hate monger, if only they would do the same for the likes of Falwell, Robertson and Dobson. But then hey, they can't do that, it's one of their chief bases of support.

Phelps supported Clinton and Gore because he thought he could have more influence with them in pushing his anti gay agenda then he would have with Bush, Sr. The Gore people distanced themselves from him when they realized what he was saying.

Phelp's views of being anti gay and anti women's right to chose are more in line with the republcians then democrats. Maybe with the likes of the republicans crooks and wacko's there was no room for him in the republican party so he tried to get into the democratic party. He wanted to push it to the right.

Let me make myself clear. I'm not saying that you believe like this group but you mentioned earlier that this group was a liberal group and I just wanted to clarify that this group by no means is liberal. This group is very conservative and the religious background is to the far right. I'm just clarifying that they are not liberal as you stated earlier. Any person with any common sense can see that. The fact that he registered as a democrat does not mean anything. He might have voted democrat up to a certain point, up to Clinton days, and then switched to conservative republican, like your Jerry Farwell's and Pat Robertson's and the 007 Club. Your extremists from your religious far right. Face it. This group is conservative. Not liberal.

He tried to run as a democrat and supported Clinton and Gore because he thought he could push his anti gay views through the party. He was wrong. that was years ago.
And we don't see him stumping for democrats today.

It's his views that are in line with the republican views. They are the core of Bush/Cheney reelection.
Fred Phelps and the "religious right." A subject that requires a biohazard suit to approach unless contamination is your desire.

The Westboro Baptist Church: Wikipedia,

"Westboro Baptist Church is a U.S. hate group headed by Fred Phelps and based in Topeka, Kansas. It runs the website GodHates**g*.com[1], and GodHatesAmerica.com, and other websites expressing condemnation of homosexuals, Roman Catholics, Muslims, Jews, Swedes, and other groups. The organization is monitored by the Anti-Defamation League,[2] and classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.[3][4] The group has achieved national notoriety in recent years due to their picketing of funeral processions for soldiers killed in combat, which functions as an extension of the Phelps' anti-United States beliefs.

While its members identify themselves as Baptists, the church is an independent Baptist church not affiliated with any known Baptist conventions or associations. The church describes itself as following Primitive Baptist and Calvinist principles.

The church bases its work around the belief expressed by its best known slogan and the address of its primary website, "God hates **g*", and expresses the opinion, based on its Biblical exegesis, that nearly every tragedy in the world is linked to homosexuality – specifically society's increasing tolerance and acceptance of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. It maintains that God hates homosexuals above all other kinds of "sinners"[5] and that homosexuality should be criminalized, punishable by the death penalty.[6]"
(note the main website title contains an extremely objectionable epithet meaning homosexual, and I edited it with * to avoid using the word.)

The website for "God Hates **g*" has about 5350755 hits, and the number is rising at about 4 per minute. The totally despicable position on Homosexuality is one of the reasons for NOT expressing anti gay sentiments. Doing that, quite frankly, puts you in league with Phelps and his hate group.

The group's theology provides motivation and enables the kind of murderous behavior that is exemplified by lynchings and bombings. They are without doubt TERRORISTS. The tag should be applied to them, and they should face the consequences of their acts. The lightest charge that should be leveled against them is inciting to riot. The heaviest should be treason and sedition. They claim that "the least of these, my breathern," includes only the followers of Jesus who take him as a personal savior, and they contend that God is punishing the USA, and the Muslim victims of our war by moving the President to make the war.

Since they base their theology on intrepretation of scripture, and since it is a theology of death to infidels, they are preaching the same philosophy as the terrorists who call all nom Muslims infidels. The hell they condemn others to is most likely awaiting them.

Much of the comment in this thread has denied the validity of the Theology of the Wesboro Baptist Church. Saying they are not like us is not enough. The response to this type of slime should be always the same. THEY ARE WRONG, THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY WRONG, AND THEY SHOULD BE RESISTED WITH THE SAME TACTICS THEY ARE USING.

Their services need to be disrupted, their leaders condmned in the same manner they condemn others and they should be consigned to the fate they wish on others.

The Golden Rule, that is almost universal amoung Religions is, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." When an individual or organization, claiming religious propriety does the kind of things that Phelps and his followers do, the Collary to the Golden Rule applies. "Is is assumed that what you do unto others is what you want done unto you, and you have no room for complaint when it is."

Ok, let's break this down. Kansas is not in the South, it's the mid-west. Al Gore is a liberal Democrat who was elected to the senate in Tennessee. Tennessee is in the South.

What does it matter how long ago it was? He supported the Democrats until he really went off the deep end and supported neither. This group has slammed Bush and hates him just as much as you do. Here's proof

quote:
"KAPELOVITZ: You call President Bush a "*** enabler."

Two weeks before September 11—and that which triggered, in our theological opinion, September 11—[Bush] appointed Mike Guest, this out-of-the-closet ***, to be United States ambassador to Romania. One week after September 11th, he ordered Colin Powell, who's against ***s but not strong enough to do anything about it, to personally swear him in in the auditorium of the State Department with his parents there and with his butt buddy are sitting in the United States embassy in Bucharest today so that all of Europe looks upon this country as a *** country and Christianity as a *** religion. The point I'm trying to make is that you posted an article trying to link this group to the Republicans. All the evidence I've posted shows otherwise. What you are posting is liberal propaganda, when confronted with facts their arguments fall apart. If you want to brainwash yourself, that's your right. Just keep that crap off our boards.

This group has slammed democrats for not going along with him!

Obviously you did not read my last post since it proves this statement wrong. Please go back and read it, it's short and maybe you'll learn something.

I agree that extremism on either the left or right is a scary and dangerous thing. The Westboro cult is beyond extremist, they're simply insane.

I will say it again as well. I have provided proof that they did in fact support a liberal Democrat and they do not support Bush. You have provided no proof to the contrary. Now they probably don't vote at all or they write in Fred Phelps name.

People who fill their heads with propaganda and refuse to look at the facts are just as scary to me as the nuts from Westboro.
