Remember those campaign promises? Forget them!

Jan. 11 (Bloomberg) -- President-elect Barack Obama said reviving the U.S. economy will require scaling back on his campaign promises and personal sacrifice from all Americans.

“I want to be realistic here, not everything that we talked about during the campaign are we going to be able to do on the pace we had hoped,” Obama said in an interview on ABC’s “This Week” program broadcast this morning. “Everybody’s going to have to give.”

My question would have to be if Obama's policies were better for America than Bush's why is he keeping the Bush tax cut, following Bush's foreign policy, and not even talking about the social programs he ran on?

I see Obama has decided to put off the closing of Gitmo beyond the 100 days he promised. Alternately, I read that about 60 of the prisoners will be accepted in their home countries after Bush leaves -- bit of hypocrisy in that. I wouldn't want to be the French ones. Several of them are still in the dungeon under the Palace of Justice in Paris. Except for stringing electric lights, that jail was last remodeled during Louis XVI's regime.

I don't look forward to the releasees moving near me stateside. It might not be good for their health!

So far, he has not promised to keep even one. Someone needs to look up all the things he said, then we can tick them off, one by one.
I am sick so I bow out! Frowner

I have them copied and pasted to a word doc from his website just after he got elected, but don't have them organized into a checklist yet.

Don't know if they changed the website yet or not Link but the issues are still up.

Good grief ! The man still has 8 days before he can actually have a chance to try to do anything positive.
Remember, it took Bush 8 years to bring this great country to it's knees. I suspect not even Obama with a Democratic congress (except for complete control of the Senate) can correct the collisional serewups delt us by the current administration.
We are in bad times, and I fear it will get worse before it starts to improve.
Bush's legacy will surly include bankrupting our country.
Two words.

Lowering expectations.

That way, the Democratic party will have political cover whatever happens.

The economy improves over the next year or so, it was the breath of fresh air and genius politices implemented by the new President, and he's crowned the head of the new American Camelot.

The economy continues to tank despite all his best efforts?

Then it'll still be Bush's fault.
Why should the American people give him a pass? Why should we allow him or any other politician to lower their expectations? We need to hold them all accountable to their promises or keep reminding them every time they do the opposite, up until its time to vote them out. We must not just accept the fact that politicians lie to us to get elected.

See. We realize this. Then the next set of politicians run on a platform of "holding the establishment accountable" and cleaning out Washington.

And we buy it. Hook, line, sinker. Game, set, match.

This is the pustulent biproduct of democratic elections. We can only vote on what a politician promises to do in the future. If that happened to be an exaggeration, so be it. We've got them for the length of their term and they'll be sure to do something nice for us to get our vote before they need us again.

He even backtracked on his cabinet picks, so much for bi-partisan.

Stating lies doesn't make it true, that statement is just a total lie

Zeb,
Would you please think before posting? Please list all the members of Obama's cabinet who is NOT Democrat or from Chicago.

Gates doesn't count, Obama did not pick him.
As for the lowly 'negro' comment, that was just stupid.

That's from the politicians handbook...whatever happens, if it's good-take credit for it...if it's bad-blame it on the last guy. Roll Eyes

Did anyone actually believe any of the BS from the Obama or McCain camps?
Democrats and Republicans are opposite sides of the same coin. SSDD

If he was wanting to go out gracefully, I would have liked to see him be honest about the issues of Katrina and Iraq & their non-existant WMD's.

Even the Weather Channel places the blame on Nagin and Blanco, both issued a mandatory evacuation 12 hrs before Katrina hit. Mississippi issued a mandatory evac 48 hrs prior to Katrina. As a last minute effort by Nagin, he corralled the available buses and loaded up the Super Dome. Where did Bush fail? The local and state level Democrats dropped the ball, it was already a disaster by the time the Feds arrived.

What about personal accountability? Mississippi was hit much harder yet they took care of themselves with little to no TV coverage.

WMDs information were from the intelligence community that Clinton had in place for 8 years.

The only thing Mississippi and Louisiana had in common with that storm was the name of the storm.
Miss took the brunt of the storm, and had wind and surge problems, which went away after the storm moved on up the state.
New Orleans avoided most of the damage from the storm itself , but was flooded for weeks after the storm passed due to the failed levies.
Nagin surly was over his head with this disaster, and did call for an evacuation. Why all those people didn't get into their big black SUV's with the "W The President" little black sticker on it, or their motor homes and head to their up north homes is still a mystery to you I know, but they just didn't.

In the aftermath of it all, there was definatly a difference. Hailey Barber was a long time lobbiest for the tobacco industry, and one time chairman of the Republican Party, and therefore had ties to the insiders and was able to get more help in a more rapid time frame. La on the other hand had a junior Governor , of the Democratic party who didn't have that insider pull.

This storm was the worst natural disaster to ever hit this country. No one could have been prepared.
My problem with Bush is that he didn't know or care about it until his staff got the balls to put together a DVD of the news broadcast. His total lack of intellectual curiosity about the death of an American city was just astounding.

Interesting how BDS can effect ones thoughts. Bush didn't Care? That's about as asinine a statement one could make. It's almost as good as Bush actually had the levees destroyed.

The ball was dropped from the bottom to the top, the slow response from the Feds was the lack of real information getting out of NOLA. ALL the National news outlets reported NOLA had dodged a bullet. Only the folks in the flood zone knew better.

Buses were acquired too late, well if Naigan had half a thought, he would have commissioned them a few days earlier and gotten the folks out. Of course half would remain, just because. That's when personal accountability steps in. Of course a left leaning liberal doesn't recognize that.

Since the folks of NOLA re-elected Naigan, well I guess they deserve each other. Have you already forgotten his Chocolate City comment, just imagine if Bush had said that.

The left acts all high and mighty and full of intellect, yet in trying times, have yet to prove anything. Does that L in Liberal stand for limited?

Name one President has not made mistakes, just ONE!

Right or wrong Bush at least stood by his decisions, unlike the previous administration that took polls before deciding what to do.

Let the LOVEFEST begin, Maddow's adam's apple is gonna swell with excitement, good thing we won't be able to see Olbermann's excitement.

Not true. The Galveston Hurricane in 1900 was the worst. Over 8,000 people died. Thousands were never found. They did not have the technology back then to warn people of the impending danger and, as a result, Galveston was nearly wiped out.

As for Katrina:
The people on the Gulf Coast were warned days in advance and told to evacuate. Unfortunately, the government in Louisiana did not act quickly enough. The main disaster was not the hurricane itself, but the levees breaking which flooded New Orleans. A little over 1800 died. This is horrible, but not the hundreds of thousands that the idiot media first reported. Money had been allocated to shore up the levees during the Clinton Administration, but the government in New Orleans used it for something else.

But again, Bush gets the blame. BDS on parade.
Excel, if Mississippi had been treated any differently, i.e., better than NOLA, the anguished screams of hand wringing, liberal Democrats, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, et al, would still be ringing in our ears. The REAL difference was the people. Mississippi got off their butts and put their hands to work while NOLA held their hands out for a Federal handout, looked for network TV cameras to posture in front of and play the victim.
