Some upset at Catholic church plan to remove memorial stones from

landmark Crystal Cathedral

A plan to remove memorial stones from the landmark Crystal Cathedral in Southern California is drawing opposition from donors who paid thousands of dollars to honor loved ones.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange County announced plans last week to remove nearly 1,800 “Walk of Faith” stones surrounding the Garden Grove cathedral.

Cathedral founder Robert Schuller sold the diamond-shaped granite memorials for up to $3,000 each, promising they’d remain for centuries.

But the Catholic Church, which bought the bankrupt church last year, says it will remove the stones for renovation purposes. Purchasers can retrieve them and also view them in digital form on a website.

The Orange County Register reports some donors are heartbroken, including 88-year-old Judy De Clercq. The Anaheim woman says she’ll beg officials not to remove her memorial to her late son.

________

If they don't remove hers, then they shouldn't remove any of them. Her memorial is no more special than any of them.

Robert Schuller is a crook, he never did care about anything but money.

This isn't war nor is it close to that semblance but there is a saying in war "To the Victors go the spoils".  Any sensible and feeling person can empathize with those donors who gave donations to secure their loved ones a place in this beautiful worship environment however fact is that the Catholic Church did purchase the property (of which I'm glad) and is keeping it for a Godly purpose and for true believers that should be a comfort rather than see it fall into some use that would dishonor Christ.

While I very much disagreed with Robert Shular and families ministry and what they taught seeing it more as a prosperity gospel (for their own family prosperity first) there were very innocent members who (all be it admittingly were gullible) who gave based upon promises made.  That said they should be glad the Catholic Church offered to return their memorial stones so that they could still maintain them and potentially place them elsewhere.  Also that they were not just destroyed, which could have happened.  These people, which possibly very honest in their faith, placed their faith in a man (Robert Shular) and it was Shular and his family that deceived and manipulated them not the Catholic Church.

Being the new owners and with a plan of their own you cannot blame the Church for seeking to keep this property honoring God in their own way and direction and they did buy the place ending the financial problems that it was in.  IF those who donated in the first place, who placed the Stones had collectively wanted to protect them, past the Shulars, then they could have collectively sought to purchase it themselves, granted most likely an impossibility, but again they shouldn't be angry at the Catholic Church but rather their anger should be directed to the REAL villain, Shular and the Robert Shular Family ministry!

Many of Shular's programs were uplifting and beautiful but they were not, what I would call, Scripturally accurate.  They were more geared toward increasing the Family ministries worth and maintaining operating revenue than honoring God and providing a true ministry of Christ so it is not surprising (to me) that God's Holy Spirit did not support, build, and increase this Ministry.  Yes it's sad to think about those families who gave so much to honor their loved ones but in this episode the Catholic Church is the victor and they at least have offered to return the spoils to those who purchased them.  The people's anger as well as ours should be directed toward the correct and appropriate direction Robert Shular Ministries and Robert Shular who most likely, himself and there eelves, are living very well off past donations and money from the, now defunct Ministry.  Again it is the Shular's to blame and IF POSSIBLE those donors should seek reimbursement, for their donation and wasted money in COURT from Robert Shular, the one who broke faith and broke the promise of long lasting memorial for their people.  I say take Robert Shular to Court and let the families and individuals that were duped collect from Shular's now, comfortable nest egg that he and/or His Family are living on for the family attempted to continue the ministry (deception)  after Robert Shular retired so they are just as guilty for they were continuing to try and milk people from their money for false and empty promises.

I know that sounds harsh, toward the families, and soft toward the Church but I'm just looking at it rationally from the standpoint of a unaffiliated and impartial observer.

Agreed that all should be treated equally, whatever the final decision, of the Catholic Church.

Except they don't own the building anymore. They lease it from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange. And even then Sr. and Jr. no longer preach, although it's Jr, and Bobby Schuller who were/are in charge as of late.

Read more carefully, the post you quoted is mine, not Vic's.

I didn't mention who owned the building & it shouldn't matter who owns it, if they don't remove 88-year-old Judy De Clercq's memorial to her son, then they shouldn't remove any of them.

Why can't they move all of them to their new church????

I wondered that too, but figured it would probably cost her another 3 grand for someone to do that. Schuller should foot the bill for moving the stones for the people.

Schuller and his clan are a bunch of moneygrubbers who will use any device or scheme they think will bring in the loot, just like so many other televangelist con men and con women.
