OK, this is it for the night!  Perhaps tomorrow this place will let me reply instead of just posting fresh.  This creates a real handicap in carrying on a conversation.

But I just read BestWorking's wonderful post about who created God... And I want to chime in.

Hi Bestworking:

I just read your initial post.  What an intriguing argument.  Well stated and well thought out.

I am happy to agree to disagree with you about the existence of God.

I support your logic that, if indeed God exists (which I think he does), he is, quite simply, beyond our comprehension.

I full agree that all attempts to prove the existence of God are flawed, and futile.

And yet, I do believe if God.

For while, as you so succinctly stated, it is impossible to prove the existence of God, it is equally impossible to prove his non-existence.

Your best arguments (and they were very good arguments) merely dispute the limited and flawed views of God which we religionists hold so dear.

Because if, indeed there is a God, then he is so much greater than our puny imaginations can conceive.  And if that is so, then any and all attempts on our parts to "define" God are doomed, right out of the gate to be flawed and can be found inadequate by those who wish to do so.

I see my limited concept of what God is as the highest of human values, personified.

And indeed, so has it been throughout the ages.

Back in the day, it was considered a virtue to shed the blood of those outside the tribe.  So back in the day it made perfect sense for those primitives to see God as someone who would cheerfully slaughter an innocent man, and enemy village, or a despised race.

But in the semi-civilized day of an advancing age of science, perhaps it makes better sense to see God as the source of Goodness, and the ultimate expression of love.

And, I might add, in this age of slowly advancing mores, perhaps it makes sense to live your understanding of what God is as a life of cheerful service toward one's fellow human beings, rather than to pridefully proclaim what God "is".

Just saying…

Al
