My mother, sister in law, and other family members are and have been teachers for over 30 years. All four of them have taught and coached. Not only were they mentors and GREAT teachers, they were mothers, family counselors, banks, taxi drivers, clothing stores, hotels, and the list goes on and on. My mother has had NUMEROUS students return to thank her for what she installed in them...hard work, independence, drive to succeed and preparing them for college. How many of you have that many hats and can attest to being such an intregal part of someone's life? Don't you want the brightest teaching and yes, raising our youth? Do you want the smartest and brightest teaching your child? If you could make more money somewhere else why would you teach? I for one, don't think they make enough!! Give them a raise!!!
This is the problem with people associated with teachers/teaching.
Giving raises to teachers is done with a broad pen. Thus meaning all teachers get raises. All teachers will admit that there are bad teachers. So when you say give teachers a raise you also include the bad teachers.
I have never seen the AEA be proactive in trying to rid this state of bad teachers. The only argument they have is they are not paid enough.
So where is the cry and public stance from teachers and the AEA to make new laws to rid the state of bad teachers. There is none, because none of you are willing to give up anything to get rid of them. Therefore you will all continue to be lumped together.
You are a group that polices itself. And you are doing a piss poor job at it and demanding more money.
Bring up test scores as a whole and start getting rid of teachers that have no right teaching and then start talking about more money.
Don't bring up one instance of a great teacher and pull a Jerry McGuire and yell SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!
