I want you all to tell me something. I got to thinking about this this afternoon.

I can eat 4 vegetables , roll or cornbread and tea at Golden Gates Cafe , Jean's Diner , Killen Diner and FatCats all here in the Mucle Shoals area for less than $7.00.

I can eat the very same thing plus tea at Shoney's and Cracker Barrel for well over $8.00 or higher.

Why is it that the local owned restaurants that wait on tables order and bringing food to you are so much cheaper than the big chain Restaurants such as Shoney's and Cracker Barrel?

Possibly something like Overhead? The size of the restaurant or the fact that they employ more workers and have a higher payroll and expenses related to the building they are in. Then I'm sure that a portion of the profits also have to go back to corporate and whereas local, mom and pop places can shop around locally for deals the larger chain restaurants have to maintain consistency therefore have to order there food from the same sources all the time. I would also venture to say that the restaurant managers get paid quite a bit more than the locally owned managers.

Could be any combination of a number of reasons but if a dollar is the difference then that's not really that much. Most food places have at least a 100% markup on their foods in order to make a profit. That means a doubling of what it cost. I don't know that for sure but that's what I have heard mentioned at one time.
