We are tired of visiting the same old franchise restaurants every weekend. We used to enjoy The Point, Barnacle Bill's and Big Mikes, but they are no more. Anyone know of any "out of the way" locally owned great places to eat? The Point always had the perfect location and what a great seafood buffet they used to have, we sure do miss them.

Sure I do miss some of those places, although the point had really gone downhill before it closed. There are still some good places left however, and these come to mind.

New Orlean's Transfer - the crawfish fettuccine is absolutely the best! So are the various seafood poboys.

Cajuns- I haven't been there in a while, but there is always a crowd.

Riccatoni's - Despite the weird commercials the food is really good, and as everyone knows who eats there, you can make a meal out of the bread and herbs.

Dale's & Georges. People debate which is best, but the truth is that both have their really strong points.

I would say that we are in sore need of a really good seafood buffet. None of the Chinese joints really cut it in that dept. The old Campbell's in down town Florence in the mid 80's had the best around here.
I can't believe that someone hasn't taken advantage of the great views located on the Tenn river and Wilson lake and built a great seafood restaurant. In addition to good food, atmosphere is a necessity. Good seafood (reasonably priced) "out of the way" location and calming/peaceful view (a solid wall of glass windows to view the water) away from the hustle and bustle of the city. When I win the lottery, I'll open one and it will be fantastic! In the meantime, if anyone on here with money would like to take this and run with it, feel free...just let me know when it opens.
I agree about the river bank with big windows being an ideal place for a great restaurant.
Pickwick Landing State Park has a restaurant with just such a location, and the food is good (at least the Sunday Buffet) , but they don't serve any seafood , unless you consider fried catfish seafood.
It is good however, and a beautiful view of the lake.
Crocodile Ed's is to open around July 27th and they are supposed to be providing fresh gulf seafood, like Lash's, that comes direct from the Gulf.

I liked Barnacle Bills also and hated when it closed but I'm wondering how the Marina Restaurant is? Has anyone tried it recently? (the floating restaurant in the McFarland Marina)

What's that place that's also a stockyard? Something about that sort of gives me the willies. Like having Wong's Cat Hospital and all u can eat Chinese buffet next door to each other or even in the same building. Eeker

DF, I think Rice Box, the new place here in Florence, is THE place to go for sushi these days. Bumble, is that the one you were talking about in Florence or is there another one?

I'll be first in line!!! We go to the China House in Lawrenceburg, TN, and while it is better than anything around the Shoals, it is still a Chinese joint, and doesn't offer all the types of seafood one would see at a good Gulf Coast seafood restaurant.

The main problem I perceive with Crocodile Ed's is they will probably be pricey. That may not be the true, but from what I can tell of the owners involved, that will most likely be the case. Nothing wrong with pricey, but I would like to see something the average person can afford.

It's hard to do fresh seafood this far inland without being pricey. By seafood, I don't mean catfish and crappie.

If you are talking about the one in Moulton, it has a "Restaurant for Lease" sign on it.

Directions?

At Pickwick Dam. Go West on Hwy 72. Take a right on Hwy 2 at Iuka exit. Stay on that road until it turns either right (to go over the dam) or left (to go to Memphis) and the park entrance is there on the right.
If you go on Sunday for the buffet, be sure to try the plum cobbler. Nothing like it anywhere else I have found.
