Drubbing? If you watched the game you'd know it was a last-second three point heave that won it. Not a drubbing, but yes still a loss to a mediocre team. Of course, UT still won the East Division and has a first-round bye, and Bama went back to their old ways and fired a coach, so there's not really much for Bama fans to brag about. Enjoy playing in the first round and I'll be enjoying a bye day watching other teams go at it.

On another note, I know they'll never do it but I think Pearson should get a long look at Bama as head coach. He's really overachieved and overcome a really dysfunctional situation. Seems like one of the good guys that should get a chance somewhere after this season if Mal doesn't keep him. Kind of like Kennedy did at Cincy when he landed the Ole Miss job.
Midknight, you seem to be confusing the basketball program with the football program. :-)

Bama's basketball program has been irrelevant on the national scene for years and even the fans seem unsure about whether they have a basketball program or not, based on attendance. I agree that it's a good time to try to make a splash but with their "blah" BB facilities and lack of revenue generated by that sport, they may have a hard time.

Honestly, the SEC is always at it's best when the marquis programs are up - UT, UA, UF, UGA, in any sport. Georgia and Bama should both try to do something to bring themselves back to relevance on the hardwood.
The only SEC basketball team to be relevant on the national scene in the last few years is UF. Of the wins the SEC has in the "big dance" in the last 3 or 4 years, I would dare say Florida has half of them.

After watching a lot of college teams this year, the SEC will be hard pressed to get four teams in the tourney, and I'll be surprised if any make it past the second round. But, who knows, they may get some good matchups and surprise me.
Yes, it'll take AU, UF or KY winning the tourney to push it to 4 teams I think, with only one coming from the West.

The SEC gets a bad rep in basketball, but in tournament time they've done OK the last four years, winning half the championships and making deep runs in the tourney:

UF won national titles in 2006 and 2007;
UT has been in the last 4 years - twice as a 2-seed and twice made the Sweet 16 including last year. They also reached the #1 ranking in the regular season last year;
Vandy made the Sweet 16 in 2007;
Kentucky made the Elite 8 in 2005;
LSU made the Final Four in 2006.

Overall a 12-team league of the SEC's power should have multiple Sweet 16 teams every year. They had 3 make it in 2006 an two make it in 2007, but only one in 2005 and 2008. Nothing to write home about.

The only real pattern that jumps out is that SEC East is on a very dominant run the last 4 or 5 years over the West, and there is no difference this year. If UA and Arkansas can get it back on track it'll put the SEC higher in the conference rankings again.

I'm pulling for Bama to get it done. Everyone will be better off.
