The latest word on the upcoming Rick Perry/American Family Association’s “The Response” prayer fest is that attendance will be far, far below the 70,000-plus seating capacity of the Houston, Texas stadium where all this religio-political fervor is scheduled to break forth. Only about 8,000 tickets have been ordered and the marathon prayer-and-fasting (one presumes the concession stand will be closed) event is on tap for this Saturday.

On the upside, one can suppose that the attendees from the pseudo-charismatic sector (those who espouse the allegedly apostolic, tongue-speaking, faith-healing antics promoted by some of the event’s “endorsers&rdquo will have plenty of personal space in which to hold up “holy hands” and wave their arms about without poking each other in the eyes. Those who might be given over to falling over backwards while being "slain in the Spirit" will not have to worry about landing atop adjacent holy rollers. The probabilities of such chance collisions are substantially reduced when human density is reduced to that of a relatively few B-B’s rolling around in a boxcar.

The ultra-ultra-rightist American Family Association, the principal sponsor of this event, has hundreds of radio stations over which they have been trying for weeks to gin up attendance, but it now seems that even with its media empire fully energized to the task, the AFA might not be able to scare up enough of its loyal devotees to fill even as much as 15 percent of the stadium capacity. This thing augurs to be a FLOP !

Perry, meanwhile, has not even committed himself to speak at this gathering, even though he is the single person who has come to be most prominently associated with “The Response.”

Hi Head,

Just curious.  Why would you be happy that ANY prayer effort has failed?  I would think that a Christian, from any denomination, would be happy to see other Christians in prayer -- especially a large prayer sessions such as this.   Why are you against it?

By the way, your discussion "Rick Perry Prayerfest FLOP" posted twice.  It might be less confusing if you deleted the other discussion.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Well BG, would you be happy to see a bunch of Catholics in prayer? Maybe led by the Pope himself?

Hi Jimi,

Unfortunately, for YOU -- that is true.  For, being a devout atheist -- God does not hear your prayers.  The only time God will hear your prayers -- is when they are preceded by one of repentance and confession of faith in Jesus Christ.

Otherwise, you will just be "spitting into the wind."

Some may accuse me of being too harsh when I write this.  No, I am not.  I am only sharing Biblical truth -- with the hope that one day a small crack of Light will penetrate Jimi's darkened soul.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Hi Smokey,

Actually, I am happy to see anyone and everyone praying -- who is praying to our God of the Bible.  Now, those others, such as our Mormon Friends, such as those in world religions like Islam and the other world religions who do not acknowledge nor worship the God of the Bible -- may as well be praying to a tree stump for the good it will do them or us.

But, yes, I love to see a large number of Roman Catholics in prayer.  It is just that I would like to see them praying to God -- and not to Mary, Joseph, or any other sinful human.  All prayers sincerely and worshipfully lifted to our God -- is a blessing to all -- even the atheists, although they will not acknowledge it.

Smokey, many Roman Catholics are Christian believers and many are not.  The same is true of the Protestant denominations and churches.  Those who are believers are my Christian brothers and sisters -- regardless of which church building we happen to be in while we worship.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Bill, you never disappoint. You are sincere, but an idiot. Have a nice, delusional day.

I believe in prayer, but I have enough sense to realize that the AFA/Rick Perry Houston event is far more a political, ideological contrivance than it is a sincere religious observance. The knee-jerk extremist politico-religious minions of the AFA do an injustice to both politics and religion. They are a bunch of  ultra, ultra-rightist Christian Nationalist propagandists who rely on ignorant and naïve sheeple for their support. Unfortunately, there is a very large flock out there for them to rely upon, although I might be over-estimating their strength, considering the apparently paltry numbers lining up to support their latest demonstration of their extremist views.

Do some research on the “endorsers” of this shindig and you will find some really weird pseudo-charismatic and heretical nut jobs whose antics are patently unscriptural. Start by Googling up “Apostle” C. Peter Wagner and Kansas City “Prophet” Mike Bickle. Anything endorsed by these con men and their ilk is to be regarded with the utmost suspicion!

Yes, Bill, I posted it twice--once in this forum and once in "Politics."  I did that because the subject matter of my post, the Perry prayer fest in Houston, is both a political and a religious event, with--as I make it--about equal proportions of both.  Thus, to assure that readers of both forums receive the benefit of my observations, I have made my comments readily available on both forums. You got a problem with THAT?

My little post occupies about one-twentieth of the space occupied by your typical offerings, Bill.  I suspect it will be read in its entirety by those lacking the interest or the patience to digest your rambling paste-ups.

Bill, you need to do some research on the "endorsers" of this prayer farce.  I believe you will find some of them to be as egregiously heretical in their own way as Mormons are in theirs!

So, Skippy, by your "reasoning," all forums should collapse on only one topic--the state of the economy--and no other topic is in any way relevant or legitimate to pursue?  That is the logical consequence of your inane comment.  It is YOU, Skippy, who are "pitiful."  You are too pitifully irrational to have any credibility within any marketplace of ideas!

President Obama has done nothing to harm the economy. We are still living under the Bush economy. Tax rates have not been increased. Payroll taxes, which affect middle income Americans, have been lowered. The huge deficits all belong to Bush, and that is a fact that Socialists like Skippy cannot deny and be taken seriously.

Beternun,

I'm sure you would feel a lot more comfortable joining in with your Moslem President Obama, kneeling on his made in Kenya prayer rug, praying to Allah. You drug politics into the religious forum, not I.

"The ultra-ultra-rightist American Family Association".

Skippy

P.S. Jimbo I don't want you to feel left out. So what can I say?

Your a socialist idiot.

Hi Head,

If you will look -- you will find that you posted it TWICE in the Religion Forum.

Well, one thing is for sure. Bill will never be speechless. Not as long as he can cut and paste.

Shows how wrong you are - as usual.  I rarely post links, except as backup, and I think I've used the Huffington Post twice now.  Who cares where the link is from?  So, what are your thoughts on all those Cs and Ds?  He has obviously risen above his level of incompetency.

And, Shalom to you, Baruch, my Friend,

Welcome to the Religion Forum!   And, thank you for that update.  Those are good numbers -- and I am sure that heaven was filled with sincere prayers.  To God be the glory!!

Yes, Thank you Bill! Glory to our Majestic God and Father. It is high time that the church took her stance in Christ. It would behoove us for the sake of our children to cast down, racial, denominational, and all other barriers that divide us. In other words dying daily to the works of the flesh. I love this except from C.S. Lewis' Screwtape letters. It defines the Church in the greatest form of her beauty.

...the church is not the building but instead is "spread out through all time and space and rooted in eternity, terrible as an army with banners. That, I confess, is a spectacle which makes our boldest tempters uneasy."

God Night!

Hi Baruch,

You tell me, "Yes, Thank you Bill!  Glory to our Majestic God and Father.  It is high time that the church took her stance in Christ.  It  would behoove us for the sake of our children to cast down, racial, denominational, and all other barriers that divide us.  In other words, dying daily to the works of the flesh.  I love this excerpt from C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters.  It defines the Church in the  greatest form of her beauty.

"...the church is not the building but instead is 'spread out through all time and space and rooted in eternity, terrible as  an army with banners. That, I confess, is a spectacle which makes our boldest tempters uneasy.'"

I agree with you 100% that our Christian churches should lay aside all denominational, racial, or any other differences and be one body of believers in Christ.  But, because we are all "flawed, yet forgiven sinners" -- that will not happen.  We must just continue to work to assure that all Christian churches believe and teach the Essential Christian Beliefs -- and, then, we can all have great  discussions and dialogues while discussing those other non-essential beliefs -- such as baptism, method of baptism, End Times prophecies, etc.

There is a beautiful Southern Gospel song which says it so well:

IT'S NOT WHAT'S OVER THE DOOR

1.  Some people think today, If heaven you would see,
You must belong to their church, Or be lost eternally.
But according to God's word, What He's still looking for,
Is what He finds within your heart,

And not what's over the door.

It's not what's over the door Of the church that you attend,
That makes you a child of god, And a heavenly citizen.
As the eyes of the Lord look this world o'er,

here's just one thing He's lookin' for
Can't you see that's what's in your heart,

And not what's over the door.

2.  Does Jesus live in your heart, And have you been born again,
Has the blood of calvary's Lamb, Washed away all your sins?
Are you fully trusting in, The crucified risen Lord,
Can't you see that it's what's in your heart,

And not what's over the door.

It's not what's over the door of the church that you attend,
That makes you a child of god, and a heavenly citizen.
As the eyes of the lord look this world o'er,

here's just one thing he's lookin' for
Can't you see that's what's in your heart,

And not what's over the door.

It's not what's over the door of the church that you attend,
That makes you a child of god,and a heavenly citizen.
As the eyes of the lord look this world o'er,

There's just one thing he's lookin' for
Can't you see that's what's in your heart,

And not what's over the door.

This is so true.  It is what is in your heart, Jesus Christ -- and not the name, or denomination of the church one attends, which gives us salvation, eternal life in Christ.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Lollapalooza, a three day music event going on this weekend in Chicago sold out - 270,000 tickets.  I know which event I would rather attend.
