Okay, can someone tell me why I never see swimmers, jetskiers or waterskiers around McFarland Park/Pickwick lake? It is because of the dangerous currents? Barge traffic? Nasty water? Other unsafe conditions? What is the nearest area to McFarland Park where people swim, jetski, waterski?

There is a small swimming area at McFarland. I think it is just too busy and the current can be strong. The best place is probably Waterloo less traffic. On the other side of the dam go to Tates slew.
To begin with...there is no stupid question.
McFarland bottoms has a swimming beach not far from the harbor. You are probably not seeing any swimmers because the weather is too cold?
Do not ski or jet ski in Tates slew...people go there to sit and congregate the area is 2 small to ski..jet skis just cause alot of tension. The area should be a no wake zone!
We used to go to Colbert Park -- take the trace off Gunwaleford Road and turn right (toward MS) and once you cross the bridge the park is to the right. I think that was the name of it. Havne't been there in years so it may not be as nice as it used to be.

Also, if you know anyone on Sunset Beach -- that was a great place to play back in the day.
I can tell you why!
The undercurrent is so swift at times, (and yes, even at the designated swimming area at McFarland), that it will pull you right under & you won't resurface until you've made it to 7 mile island!
Especially if there are barges running up or down the river, or the spillways have been open.

I personally know of 2 grown men (on separate occasions) who were swept under and drowned.
Both of their bodies were found at 7 mile, beaten & battered by the current & rocks.

It's Dangerous! Even for the most advanced swimmer!
