What's your view of Rosie's? What have you experienced there? Any favorite dishes? My own is described below.

I was happy to see it open up. I don't usually care for chain restaurants, but I liked the fact that they were locating downtown and would help build up that area.

I've found the service to be adequate. The servers I've experienced were quite good, but I think that the management stretches them a little too thin. A server with 10 or more tables on a busy night can't really give each enough attention to provide excellent service, no matter how good he or she may be. I've noticed their staff is mostly quite young, and they appear to be hiring frequently. Maybe this adds to the effect.

The food I've ordered has been consistently good, though nothing has really knocked me off my feet. I'm a sucker for chips & salsa, and they do have a decent salsa that they keep coming along with warm chips until the order arrives. This is a good thing. I haven't actually timed how long my order has taken, but it seems to come out in a reasonable period.

The fajitas are REALLY, REALLY, REALLY good. They're the best dish I've had so far. They make them with either steak, chicken, a combo of both, or all veggie if you have a vegetarian in your family. The food arrives on a HUGE sizzling cast iron platter, along with the tortillas. You also get very large side portions of refried beans, rice, salsa, cheese, sour cream, and guacamole. (I may have forgotten something there, but you get the idea.) If 4 people order fajitas at a booth, there is almost not enough room on the table: it's that much food. The quesadillas are fine as well, just about what you'd expect. The chicken dishes are not as consistent. Sometimes you might have been better off to stay home, fry up a little chicken, and put a little salsa & cheese on it. I can't recommend those.

Their prices are a little hefty, especially when compared to other mexican restaurants in this area. For me, it's a fairly close balance as to what I pay compared to the quality of the food and the atmosphere. I usually only go when I'm having dinner with friends or with relatives over the holidays. I like it, but it's not a place I go regularly with my husband. I have only gone for dinner, but I've seen the lunch menu also. Those prices are not quite so high. I understand they do carry-outs, so it might be a great place for lunch for someone who works downtown.

It is one of my favorite restaurants! I love the food there because the ingredients seem so fresh and the dishes are huge. I've tried a variety of things and they have all been good. The barbeque chicken nachos are out of this world! The times I've been there have usually been early and not during the peak hours. We have always had excellent service. They usually have the salsa at the table almost immediately and the dishes arrive pretty fast as well. I haven't had a bad experience there yet and I have eaten there about 20 times since they have opened.
hate it! i had been a couple times when it first opened,, things were right at average. During the W. C. Handy Festival there were 9 members of my family went there for diner one night,big,big mistake. We expected the service to be off because of the crowd,we DID NOT expect all 9 people to become ill from the food. Have not been back, nor will I in the future
My wife & I ate at Rosie's one time a few months after it opened. The food was alright and service was good. The waitress did fail the lemon test so that was the mark down from excellent to good. I guess my biggest gripe is paying top dollar steak price for mexican food. I just can't see paying 12 to 15 dollars per serving for mex food when for the same money I can go to O'Brian's and have a good steak. So, in a nutshell, my biggest gripe was Price.

Okay I'm curious, what is the lemon test??
The lemon test is my first test of how the server is going to be. I always order un-sweet tea with extra lemon. 60 percent of the time the server is not listening to what I order because of their rote mindset training. They hear parts of the orders but in their mind they are formulating their next rote question. IMHO if the extra lemon doesn't get to the table, it means they ain't listening to what I really ordered. So, their tip factor reduces 5% at that point and they have to earn their way back up.

I'm not going to comment on your tipping approach, but I do wonder if I would have passed your lemon test as a server. My response would have been to bring you a small plate with 4 slices of lemon (plus the one on the glass) and politely comment that I would be happy to bring you more if you needed - just to let me know. If you were there for a refill or two and I noticed the lemons were going fast or had vanished since my last visit to your table and yet you hadn't mentioned anything about needing more, I'd bring you another few slices, smile demurely, and say, "I brought you these, just case." As I set them on the table, I'd glance over and give your wife a polite smile with as she and I shared a knowing look that thank goodness she wouldn't have to worry about you talking about not having enough lemons in your drink throughout the entire meal. I guess I do want to go back to your tipping policy: would that have brought me UP above your 'standard tip', like the 5% that the one who forgot it lost? Wink Riddle me that.
