$800K was what was "bragged" to me by Russellville Alum. I'm glad it was paid for by booster club, but 240K is easy to come up with when you don't have to pay for anything else - including players.

OK, first of all, I don't really care whether Rville has a good football team/winning season or not.

And, secondly, I'm not a fan of Roger Bedford's, either.

But it's been noted on more than one post that the jumbotron is being paid for by PRIVATE monies - NOT tax dollars. If the local business owners in Rville want to kick in and pay for this, what's it to anyone else?

Roger doesn't have a son playing anymore. I think it's probably from local businesses....maybe G&G Steel? I know the Gist's are going to install it, and they do have a son playing now.
I agree, if it's private funding, who cares?
It is sad, however, that Parents have to provide toilet paper, band aids, liquid soap, etc.. in addition to the "$20.00 ROOM DONATION" for the classrooms, when the Athletics Dept. will have a Jumbotron and underground batting cages for the baseball field. Russellville already had the best football stadium in North Alabama, but, oh well......
OK - I'm probably going to regret opening up this can of worms again, but curiosity is getting the best of me, so here goes - - -

According to rumor, repeat RUMOR, the jumbotron is up and working. And, it has Roger Bedford's name on it.

Now, I've defended the jumbotron all the way through because it was being paid for with private monies. And, I understand that there are additional signs on the scoreboard for the major sponsors. But where did Roger Bedford come from? DID he get money for this? Did he contribute his own personal money toward this? *Enquiring* minds want to know.

Because while I don't necessarily agree with it, it doesn't bother me as long as no tax dollars are being spent. But if Roger's involved . . . . .

So, if there are any on-the-spot Russellville folks who could respond, I'm very interested.

I'm one of the guys running this thing friday and it will be on friday night. as for as for bedford ,his name is on it, but i think it is his own money from what i have heard.
I agree--Vina has never had the money poured into improvements like the larger schools. But it is a much smaller school and so I guess the big schools are where the $$ money is at. I say this because I went to Vina and know how it's always went over there. Seems to be doing a bit better though these days. More improvements.

Using private money at first glance seems to be ok, but if one considers that if Roger hadn't already provided so much for the Russellville sports program, that "private" money would be used for things such as a new field house, or $1.5 million baseball field. Because Roger (Alabama tax payers) has already provided these luxuries, private money can now be used for recruiting tools such as a jumbotron. Don't be fooled, it is a recruiting tool, and anyone who says different is delusional or a liar.
OK, let's play "Devils Adovocate"
Say your a State Senator........You are also a respected Lawyer in your own right........therefore you have a hefty income.
You graduated from Russellville High School, your Son graduated from Russellville High School.
Would you donate private funds to better the Stadium of your Alma Mater?
Maybe if other individuals would take more pride in THEIR Alma Mater's, other schools would have the same.
Just a thought...... Smiler
Smooth operator does bring up a good point - without the grants, appropriations or whatever it is that Rville has received for their different sports facilities, the luxury of a jumbotron wouldn't be possible.

Many, many, many athletic booster clubs, (as well as band parents, PTA, etc) use their fundraising for necessities, such as painting the field house, or putting new bleachers in at the baseball field. But, because of Rville has a state of the art field house, baseball complex and so on, the booster club isn't forced to use its money for these items, as most clubs are. Therefore, they are able to use their money to purchase a jumbotron.

I hadn't really looked at it that way before Smooth operator posted. Interesting point.
