UPS lost two today in a A300 crash at Birmingham airport RIP. One reason I try to never leave the house mad or forget to tell my family I love them, you never know a accident can happen. Strangely I will be flying a A300 to Louisville today it's sure to be a somber flight.

That is bad. Be sure to go through the check list and kick the tires. Be safe.
HiFlyer2,
Any ideas on what might have caused it, though it is early? The weather was misty rain and fog from what I have seen on the aviation weather sites. I tried to find archives of BHM traffic at ATC.net, but there is no feed from KBHM. Wanted to see if they had declared an emergency.
Interestingly the front portion of the plane looks intact, and it hit the hillside. I was hoping for a better outcome on the pilot/copilot. A sad day indeed.
Thought about you when I heard this. You be careful my friend, too many un-drunk beers down on the Coast.
Thanks, Seeweed and look forward to many more beers!
Tetates,
I hate to state any ideas until some facts come in that are from a reliable source and no such information has been released by the FAA or NTSB. All I know is the ILS and PAPI "visual slope indicator" were NOTAMed out of service for that runway due to airport construction.
I hope that had nothing to do with it. You know the ILS system has been down at MSL for a while after a lady ran a car over the equipment out there. The GPS (WAAS) works well, and I would hope that a similar system was in use at BHM. Do you fly commercially HF?
Same aircraft A300 for FedEx.

That "fly by night" outfit !!

Be safe!!
a fed-x pilot who is a friend of mine said the planes he flew had IAP Precision capabilities. Was he lying? Maybe they did but a non authorized procedure by fed-x.
Not sure of your question FedEx can do percision approaches down to 300 rvr for some ac but the a300 currently 600 rvr. Not sure what ups has ops spec approval for. Anyway a mute point as the ils was notamed out of service so there was no percision approach for that rwy.
I read a report that there was no distress call and that the plane was already on fire before it crashed.
This is so sad...
Thankfully it missed the neighborhood just a couple of blocks from the crash. There could have been many more lives lost.
Be safe HiFlyer. I would miss you if you weren't here to give me a hard time.
Jank,
thanks, never mean to come across as giving a hard time. I really try not to talk down to people or get ugly about stuff as all communication stops then. I just try to state my opinion. I have been lucky and travel all over the globe for work and have good friends all over this planet who are nothing like me. "yes even atheist and a few Muslim". I have learned more by talking and listening to people who opinion differs greatly from mine. Heck even me and one of the staunch liberals on this board have found we have much in common. I personally think most of us have more in common than not. Made it back ok drinking jack and coke and looking out on pickwick lake.

And that Liberal really enjoyed having supper with that ole Conservative and his wife !
Hiflyer,
When I say "giving me a hard time" I mean that in jest. I enjoy discussing issues with those that oppose my own view on them. What fun would it be if we all agreed all the time.
Glad you made it back safe.
