I was just noticing something today that I wanted some others view points on.
If you go eat at Ryan’s , Barn Hills , or any all you can eat buffet do you notice that the people are sad , ugly , unhealthy and poor looking? You have to eat at Olive Garden, Brinley Brothers , or Logans ect.. to see people that look healthy and clean. If you go into a buffet during the first of the month the client el really looks bad.

I have also notice an increase in Yankees in our midst. You can tell not only by the way they talk but also how they look unclean or just as redneck as our trailer trash does down here. I mean most northern women don’t style their hair.

Most southern girls curl or style their hair, wear make up and dress nice and look good.

Just an observation of mine, what do you think?

well get used to it,thats a large portion of the type folks we have paid our tax dollars to recruit to live here thru the "retirement community living".They bring the whole kit-and-kaboodle clan with them.
we do have a cheaper cost of living here, word spreads thru their families how far they can use their welfare, disability, etc. here. One relative will still be remaining north(probably the only working member of the family), they ALL use that address to maintain their higher dollar checks to remain the same, yet they are physically residing here.
I did not detect any distinction regarding people working the system. A sweeping statement like "most northern women don't style their hair", seems to be a statement against "most northern women", not people working the system. How much time have you spent north of the Mason-Dixon to notice?
well now i have to disagree with Yo brothas comments on the womens appearence. take away the curling iron and the makeup suitcase, southern women ain't nothin to brag about.and curled hair and a ton of makeup does not equal clean.

btw spent quite a bit of time as all my sibblings live away from here(smarter than me obviously to get outta here).

If you "noticed" it "today" would it be safe to say you were in them all "today"? Does your observation that the people at Olive Garden, Brinley Brothers , or Logans ect. "look healthy and clean" mean that they are? Define "redneck" and "trailer trash". Just curious since I'm proud to be a "redneck" and since I live in a mobile home or "house trailer" or "manufactured home" I wondered if it applied to anyone that did. By the way, its paid for and while it may not add a fortune to my assets to leave behind to my heirs I won't be leaving alot of debts for society to have to cover either. If I was in one of the buffets when you made your observation I wonder if you might have been the suit with the pail white hands, freshly manicured nails and Opey haircut that turned his nose up and refused to acknowledge the existence of someone that was less than thou when they greeted you.

Define "poor looking" because I have known of some people that had all the money any one man and his family could ever need but you wouldn't know it to look at them. Should they be wearing some of that bling bling or some of them fancy designer clothes? Would you look down on me if you saw me getting into my '79 Ford truck wearing coveralls coming out of Ryan's? Would you still look down on me if I later pulled into Olive Garden's parking lot to see if you needed a jump start because you had your hood up? Would you refuse my help because of my looks or because I had a fresh wad of tobacco or a cigarette in my mouth or would you accept and talk down on me later?

Read this post carefully and you won't see any judgement on my part and if you ever do see me judging an individual please point it out to me.

I simply ask these questions to get a clear understanding of where you are coming from.

A few years ago, I stayed in Chicago for a couple of days. I was in the nice part of downtown near a couple of colleges, trendy bars, and shops. Out of the two days, I say maybe one or two women I considered attractive. Everyone else went around with no makeup, sweats, hair pulled back, and plain.

When I landed back in Nashville, walking through the airport felt like being backstage at a fashion show. The women were much better looking. I'm a firm believer that Southern women are more attractive, there is also a theory about this.

After the Civil War, a large number of men were killed. The number of available men in the South was lower compared to the number of available women, so the more attractive women were able to marry and have families. Those genes were passed down and that's why you'll find more attractive people in the South than in the North. Just look at how many celebrities are Southern, Resee Witherspoon, Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, Renee Zellweger just to name a few.
Most women in the North know that they are worth more than their looks and bodies. How many men do you see dressed to the nines and if you do they aren't worth their weight in salt.
I work at home running the office end of my husband's business and taking care of my grandchildren.I am a very clean person with a very clean house, but do I bother to wear make-up and buy expensive clothes? NO, I value myself and our hard earned money more than that.Yes,my husband is usually greasy and oily, but that is what pays the bills and he is a purebred redneck country boy.He loves me the way I am and I'm sure he likes the fact that I don't waste his money on stupid things like expensive clothes and make-up.I'm sorry, but I know this next comment is going to sound as stupid as YO's.Usually all those expensive clothes go along with a gold digger attitude and very few brains. And it is usually the ones on welfare that have all that time to shop and make theirselves pretty just to go out and find some idiot to spend more money on them.

LOL...you just described my Chicago cousins. I thought that was just their causal look, but then they came home for our grandmother's funeral and showed up at the service in slacks and flip-flops. And talked down to us because we're "rednecks."

Frankly, my dear, i've never met a redneck i didn't like.

I detect "scorned woman syndrome" in your statement there, yankeewitch.......

My wife is a Southern Belle from Savannah, GA. She knows how to dress nice, and is very strict about her apperance. Lord, it is funny to hear her talk about others when we go out. She points out the ones to me who are not wearing their clothes right, etc. Example: she explained to me that women are supposed to wear open-toe shoes from around 1 April to 1 September (give or take a few days). We went to a ball, and she was going on about how many didn't wear their shoes right, dresses that were good or bad, etc.

As far as the yankee females go: I have lived in the North and living right now in a Yankee state (Kansas). My wife's words, not mine: the women here are homely looking....In fact, they have the single Catholic look: fat, short hair, many single, not a cheery attitude, thick glasses with large frames, etc. Definately not like the women you see and I grew up around in Savannah (My wife is Catholic BTW, again, her words, not mine).

Is my wife a gold digger? Nope. I know what a gold digger is (I was a victim of one once...). My wife has a Master's and teaches school. She doesn't want her life to end up in the gutter, and takes pride in herself and appearance.

Yo: my wife refuses to go to those establishments you mentioned....not only does she think the food there icky, but she said the only ones that go there are the ones that go their to pig out/gourge on food... When we lived in Columbia, SC (up until last year), a buffet-style restaurant opened up. Lets just say if human whaling was allowed, that day would have resulted in a large amount of blubber taken for use to make whale-oil products. That was in fact the last time we visited.
I guess I'm more down to earth than most. When I lived in Chicago,my best friend and I use to criticize everyone. And we would especially do it in front of boyfriends just so they would think like you do.Now I have better things to do.I do know how to dress and apply make-up,but that isn't my main focus in life.

As for being a scorned woman-far from it!
Re:"Expensive clothing"

The cost of a person's clothing has nothing to do with their appearance.
There are people that put on designer brand clothing and still look sloppy and unkempt.
I've also known the opposite.....people that buy from the dollar stores and look fantastic.
Pride in appearance, effort and desire to look nice is worth much more than the price tag of what you have on.
Something tacky and unflattering is just that no matter how much it cost.

and face it, even though we all now we're not supposed to do it, until we get to know someonewe judge them by their appearance.

Amen.....That was the whole point all along my wife was trying to make to me. People DO jusge you by your appearance. Heck, why do you think that prior going to a job interview, you are told to dress nice, etc.? In the military, military bearing and appearance are a big deal, VERY big deal.
Friends of mine recently moved to Seattle, Washington...Dad, Mom & 4 girls...Dad says they are the 5 best looking females in Seattle, no joke. Mom says they stick out like a sore thumb. They are the only ones with umbrellas, for one thing. They also fix their hair, have on make-up and their clothes match, which apparently is a true sign that you are a transplant or a visitor. They were just making the observation, btw, not putting Seattle natives down. They've made friends quickly & love it there. Dad is an engineer & loves his job. THE END Smiler

To address the "LOOKS" brought back a memory of watching a discussion on skin and beauty secrets on one of those talk shows geared toward women... They said the climate in the South was the absolute BEST for any woman's skin... Then they interviewed 2 men who travelled extensively through the US on a mission to find beauty... They said that in comparison, that the Southern people, both genders, were by far the best looking in the Nation... said had something to do with the humidities and such... I know I am leaving a lot out here, but I was really shocked to see that on a National Television Talk Show that people ALL said that NATURAL beauty was found in the South!!!

Guess they didn't go to Barnhills!!! LOL..

I personally cannot eat off of any Buffet... A few of my friends kids worked in places like that and LOVED to share the stories of what went on when putting up/taking down a buffet... I looked it up on WebMD, and it said that there is more bacteria on ONE single buffet than in an entire City of about 30,000 people... it makes sense to me in a lot of ways, especially since hearing the horrid "TALES" that these employees that worked there told.

If I go into a resturant, and sit anywhere close to people who look "unkempt" then it makes it to where I can barely eat... if that makes sense.

So I cannot disagree with your post at all... what OTHER people do actually DOES effect our lives in small ways that you mentioned.

Only thing I CAN disagree on is the Yankee part... I have noticed an increase also, but the ones that I have met, I really like... I haven't had any bad experiences with any of them.

I also do NOT think this post is bigotry, it is just a dose of realism. I wish these things weren't true, but most of them are VERY true.

Also on a health note... EVERYONE needs to be aware that eating off a buffet in "SOME" cases can cause you to be sick a day or so later, it is the bacteria swirling through your system. Also, people who eat at unlimited Buffets are prone to overeat and that too is unhealthy.

Stick to the resturants like Olive Garden, Chili's, and a little nicer places like that, because in MY opinion, even though they may cost a little more, you probably will leave WITHOUT the extra bacteria...

On another note.... I have another question to pose. Have ANY of you ever gotten a server that looked unclean or had a bad smell to them??? I have, and I usually decline to order food and just get a cup of coffee and eat later... if that is being a bigot then so be it... ANYONE can be clean... they may not be rich, but they CAN be clean!!! ESPECIALLY when serving food to people.

I believe that... the harsh cold winters play heck with people's skin which in turn, if they dont take care of themselves, it ages them.

And I can tell you 2 different "yankee" guys that I work with that have said that there is NO WAY to beat Southern women on looks!!! And both have travelled the country in their line of work, that was something that they observed. Sure made us females feel better about ourselves, LOL!!!
Looking nice on the outside has a lot to do with how you feel on the inside. It doesn't matter who you are, it makes you feel good to dress up and go out somewhere nice. Everyone likes it when someone else complements them on their appearance. Yes, a person should be proud of who they are more than what they look like, however appearance has a lot to do with first impressions. Your first form of communication with someone is how you look, that's why we dress nice for job interviews. I think Southern women understand this more than women elsewhere. They are proud of who they are and want everyone to know it, so they always look nice in public.

I don’t mean to be critical of others, but I have to agree with you Brotha. Back when my gut was about three times the size it is now I went to Ryan’s Trough. After my second or third plate I looked around and realized I was smaller than most of the people there – and, believe me, I was not small at all. I told myself then and there that I would never again go to an all you can eat.

I have to agree with you, I dont go to ryan's or barnhills for that very reason. It is way too easy to eat too much. I myself would like (need) to lose 20 to 30 pounds and strugle with it every day.

White before Easter?!?! Heaven forbid!! Eeker

I was only speaking of their appearance not there personality.

I have met an unusual large number of them in the Elgin and Rogersville area and I have to agree with Smurph. I wondered why the younger northerners were moving here since we are over run with employment opportunities. What you mentioned about cheating the welfare system makes sense. The one that I see look like crack heads, so that must be what they are doing.

I have met some nice northerners also. To call me a bigot for making observations that evidently everyone else sees is just plain ignorance.
Unlimited food for one cheap price attracts people with control issues. They don't control how much they eat, how much they spend, how they live their lives. It's easy to sit on your butt and eat, it's hard to exercise and eat right. Although I don't mind going to a buffet every now and then because it's quicker, I don't go as often because it's sad seeing people there who just want to stuff their face for one low price. However, that's the choice they made and they're the ones who will live with it.

Cool, East Florence has been a breeding ground for criminal activity at least since the late 70's. It is even worse today and I think people will think twice about going there at night.

I went to see Hank Williams Jr. at the Florence coliseum back in 1982. I had to park behind the coliseum on the street side as did many others. When I went back to my car the police were walking up and down the street with dogs. I ask them why they were there and they pointed at several cars that had windows knocked out of them. This was a white neighbor hood and that part of Florence has not gotten any better.

I hope that answers your question.

That is an interesting point, but it was 25 years ago, the time is now to look at changing the atmosphere to something more desirable. I read of crime happening at other areas more than east flo. If a small part of it is developed to a more desirable place it could be a nice asset to the comunity. Belive me things has definately improved in the past 25 years. Let's get rid of all the run down areas, a lot of the crime will go with it.
Small Town, small mines. People in the north are more relaxed about the way they dress. Just because you don't dress in suits when you go out does not mean that you are poor. I have lived in the south and the north. Women where I live do style their hair, take baths, look good and dress well, as you know in everystate you do have those that don't. Have you ever thought that maybe the women that don't have better things to do with their money than waste it on makeup, clothes and junk in general when they just might have a family to support. Perhaps you are to young to know this or else you have not done done your homework as well as you should have. I see people at Olive Garden that don't look like all that either and their body odor could use a lot of help. So please if you have not done your homework except for where you live then I suggest you not comment on things you don't know about.
I think I took the Yankee thing too personally.Yes,I wear jeans and t-shirt most of the time, but I am romping outside with kids most of the time.Think about this though July, hot summer day,it sure isn't a northerner that walks around with their shorts cut off so short that they get buried in the crack of their -well you know.Their boobies hanging out all over the place with no bra and a shirt that isn't any bigger than a bra and no shoes on the dirtiest feet I have ever seen.
Unclegus,
This question I can answer.Up north people are raised to not be friendly, because it gets you in trouble. You can be standing waiting for a bus, someone comes up to you and asks if you have the time,if you look at your watch to tell them 9 out of 10 times they steal your watch. We are taught to mind our own business and not make eye contact for this same reason. It took me along time to get use to all of the friendly people here.

That makes sense, now that you said that, I remeber when I was visiting my sister in Seattle in 1982, I used to get so mad because nobody would wave back to me. I was sure glad to be back in alabama after three weeks of unfreindly people. Is because we are freindy why we are looked down upon.
I complain alot that is just my nature,I don't think anyone is really looked down upon. When I see a comment I don't like I usually make a stupid comment back before I can stop myself.I love Alabama,I wouldn't live anywhere else in the world.Except for a few idiots that I have encountered,I love the people here, they are fun loving and friendly.
I do have to admit I encountered a whole lot more idiots and criminals up there.
