"Fun-loving and friendly"! You must be kidding. Just the recent posts convince me how unfriendly this area can be. I asked a friend of mine how long does it take to feel a part of the community and really be accepted and the answer was "NEVER". No matter how much you try to give back to the community and participate, it will not be enough. There are degrees of acceptance, but always an outsider. And before you get sanctimonious, you have not been in that position and cannot understand it if you are a native. Also, I have not met many men here that would make the cover of GQ. I also feel that some on this forum may have lost their mirrors long ago, but can still judge everyone else. Has anyone here seen Jerry Springer? That is the perception some from other parts of the country have of the south. You can find the good, bad, and ugly in any part of the country. If we are attracting the "wrong" people from other parts of the country, then maybe we should fix what they are coming for.
There is more that I wanted to say, however, I am not sure it would be heard anyway. I joined this forum for an opportunity to share in healthy discussion on a variety of subjucts. To say I am disappointed would be an understatement. I grew up in the south and have lived all my life in the south and am proud of it. I have relatives all across the country. Gosh, I even have some attractive and clean northern relatives.
That being said, the negativity on this forum abounds. Right now I am feeling very negative. It is very contagious. Some of the people that post seem to have an underlying sadness about them. I guess there are people who are sad all over the country, not just the north.

There is an elderly yankee couple from Ohio that lives across the street from us. They're very nice folks, but different. When I see them outside, I wave to them. I lived in Greenhill until I was 16, it's became habit to wave. They always have a surprised look, they wave back but they weren't expecting me to acknowledge them.

Could it be that the democratic or maybe the socialist movement is working or taking affect? Is that why we see so many sad, unhealthy people? I'm being serious. I have not seen as many awful looking folks as I have witnessed in the passed 3-5 years as I see today.

i was born here in the South and I have lived here all my life. I love the South. What I don't like is the people who come here and poke fun at the native people, complain about jobs, entertainment and everything else that does not meet their standards.
If the South is such a backward , rednecked, dirty place WHY DID THEY COME HERE?Why did they leave that heavenly place they are from?
A lot of yankees come here and act as if they are so far above the southern people. Well if we are so bad , why do they stay here and endure our poor manners, bad fashion and silly drawling speech. I think they must want to just complain about something, and Why don't they go home? Did they move here on their own accord or did they get run out of their hometown.?

They move here for cheap real estate and mild weather. Living up north is not for the faint of heart. We are lucky in this area to have reasonable prices for real estate. Unfortunately, we have depressed wages also. But, if you are retiring, the south is where to be.

1. Housing markets all over the U.S. have slowed down. The one market that has not slowed down: the South...
2. Recently, this news clip I saw on the Fox Report with Shep Smith last Thursday. Appears NASCAR is looking to expand again, this time into the Seattle area. Several Seattle and Wash State leaders vocally stated "No, we dont want rednecks and hicks to come up here..." Several citizens of Seattle were also asked about it, and the anti-South comments were numerous. Those making the comments looked like misguided members of the local commune, if you catch my drift. Richard Petty, who visited to discuss the deal, was accused of being a drunk and having several past DUI's. He was shocked to say the least. I have been to Seattle before....if you are like them, then you are welcome. If not, you are shunned. I have no desire to go and live on the Left Coast...this is one of them.

I apologize to Brent for my comment. I don't know him and should not have made it personal. The negativity on this forum has always bothered me and now I am a part of it. It must be time for me to go. I have become part of the problem and not the solution.

Sure, I was responding to the lines "Sad, unhealthy & poor" also "Most southern girls curl or style their hair, wear makeup and dress nice and look good"
Dont get me wrong, I have seen several very attractive ladys in the south, its just when I see one here in the Shoals I dont just "assume" she is southern just like when I see one that is not I dont assume anything either.
As far as Kindreds jab, I do consider myself very laughable, I look for humor in everything, it helps overcome the stupid things others do.

Yo, thanks for pointing that out for me. I am new and did not realize I could take my words back. Please believe me when I say that my regret is real.
I went with a group to Ukraine a few years ago. We were told not to smile, make eye contact or speak unless asked a question when going through customs. Telling a Southern gal this is like directing us to please cease breathing.
