Once more, Rick Santorum unnecessarily blunders into subject matter that can do his campaign nothing but harm.  Speaking in Puerto Ricoa couple of days ago, he noted that if that territory was to achieve statehood, it would have to accept English as the "main language.":

<<<"According to a Spanish translation of the interview posted on El Vocero’s Web site, Santorum said that “as in any other state, (Puerto Rico) should comply with this and every other federal law -- and that is that English must be the main language.”

"A video of a subsequent interview with El Vocero shows Santorum explaining at length his position that Puerto Rico must make English its “main language” if it wants to achieve statehood.

On Thursday, as the comments were vilified both in Puerto Rico and on theU.S.mainland, Santorum sought to clarify his remarks.

“What I said is English has to be learned as a language and this has to be a country where English is widely spoken and used, yes,” Santorum told reporters in San Juan, according to multiple reports.>>>>

There is NO FEDERAL LAW requiring English as the official language of this nation or requiring that English must be the prevailing language of a territory before that territory can be granted statehood.

Santorum backtracked in an effort to "explain" what he meant, but his "explanation" was a transparent effort at damage control.

Santorum need not have mentioned anything at all about English, Spanish, or any other language. How remarkably inept of him to simultaneously display his ignorance and alienate voters!

Santorum is not stupid, but he sometimes shows a regrettable tendency to scramble the facts.

If there was some credible, broadly-appealing candidate running against him, such oafish gaffes would doom Santorum's campaign.  He must be thankful that his only viable challengers are a plastic, squirrelly zillionaire and a transparent, scheming serial adulterer.

I yam what I yam and that's all I yam--but it is enough!
