Does anyone know any thing about the insurance that they offer from school. I have got to decide to put my kids on my bcbs @ 745 a month (right now my boss pays mine - single coverage) or go with something else. Any suggestions? - ALL KIDS is out of the question since i went back to work. & with 5 yr old twins not having insurance is NOT AN OPTION!

I am curious: "All Kids" does not disqualify you just because you have a job. The price of the All Kids coverage varies with your income. WHy do you think you aren't eligible?

Check out: http://www.adph.org/allkids/Default.asp?id=588

Good luck to you. Good health care coverage sure is expensive these days.
I am not sure how many children you have total and if you are married or not but the income guideline for a family of 3 (just you and the twins) is between $2148-$2862 before taxes. If there are other members of your family the income allowance goes up from there. If you make between those amounts, you qualify for all kids with a fee, if you make between $1905-2147 your children qualify for Low Fee All Kids, and if you make less than that, your children qualify for medicaid.
okay, sorry for the confusion. I recently went back to work & my husband also works. With my extra income we are no longer eligible for Medicaid or ALL KIDS. The kids ALL KIDS coverage is about to end (August 31 i think). & yes it is $745.00 a month for family coverage with blue cross & blue shield through my company since there are only 6 of us & it is about $65.00 less a month for family coverage for my husbands insurance. However, his open enrollment isnt until January & mine is August. & believe me I will miss ALL KIDS & Medicaid. I would recommend them to any one with children. I never had any trouble with either of them. see the worst thing about this is that my employer pays my single coverage & my hubbies employer pays his coverage, so we were out nothing on our insurance & just had a small fee for the boys but know i am afraid that we go from not paying insurance to paying $745 a month. Some times I wonder if this whole full time job "work thing" is really worth it!! lol!!
Whoa, $745.00 a month is so expensive. I mean, that's a mortgage on a nice home. And I understand that's just how it is for small companies. The more employees there are, the less expensive and better the plan, typically. There has to be something else. I think I would just get on the phone with various insurance companies and price compare some individual, private policies for the children. BCBS of AL has open enrollment about once a year for private insurance, and I have a self-employed friend who enrolled, and she pays $123.00 a month. She had to wait a year for a pre-existing condition before she could be insured for that condition, but anything else that came up within that first year was covered. The thing about that open enrollment is it isn't heavily advertised, but they will run an ad in the newspaper. You just have to catch it.
If the kids are on insurance now and can prove it (you need a certificate of creditable coverage, your insurance company can provide that) you don't have a waiting period with BC/BS. If there is a reason (it's called an "event") that causes YOU to lose coverage along with the children you should be able to get coverage before the open enrollment period of your husband's insurance. Contact his employer.

Check out the personal insurance policies of companies like Prudential, Allstate, etc. Sometimes, because of the kind of coverages the companies provide you can do better on your own. Read the policies carefully, you do not want huge deductibles with kids, and you do not want to buy an "accident" policy. The school insurance is definitely not what you need.

OOOOh, I slipped back into agent mode there for a second.
Have you checked into United Healthcare's Definity Consumer Driven Healthcare Plan. I have it at work. It is not bad. Definity basically gives me 1500/year to manage. All preventative care is free and doesn't go against your 1500 allotment. I have a family of 4 and we don't have a problem going over the 1500. The deductible after you spend your 1500 is around 2000 but at least you have some coverage incase you have a catastrophic accident/illness. Not saying it is the best thing in the world but it is better than nothing and from my experience cheaper than BCBS.
Vick is right. You have a qualifying event in losing coverage. At least you should. I guess I wont complain about my coverage anymore. Your is so high. Are you making enough money to warrent returning to work? I mean, it may actually be costing you money. With that high og an isurance bill, deductable and day care for the twins, you may be better off staying at home.
he manages apts there in Florence & I work @ a civil engineering firm in Huntsville. I didnt realize until now how bad our insurance really was. But we have no reason to complain until now because his insurance & mine has been completely paid until now. I did find out today that my company will still pay an employees part so it will just be 460 a month for family coverage.
