The rest of us cannot afford to spend what these overzealous teachers "require". What happened to "bring paper and pencils to class"? A child does not need $100 worth of school supplies to learn. And judging from the job the educators in Alabama are doing with our school children (are we out of the bottom 5 yet in the nation???) throwing money at them, $10 workbooks, and $20 worth of tissues and hand sanitizer is not helping.

SMART CHICK> PLEASE RE - READ THE POST> IT says when the kids are out for the summer I spend extra - 200 on GROCERIES. I dont know what the rest of your comment means. What I said was if you will read that with the extra groceries from them being home all day and their friends being there, plus activities that make summer FUN that I feel like I am saving money when they go back to school. EVERY parent with children spends more during the summer. I sware, if you "SMART" people would read the posts before you jump down someones throat you might not sound so unstable. Calm down, I will raise my children and you do the same, it was simply my point of view.

Thank you for your kind words. I know I don't owe an explanation, but I just want people to know there is always more than one side to everything. It is all point of view.

Oh, and I wanted to add something - not all parents are bad, in fact, 95% of the parents I work with are great and wonderful. It is the other 5% of parents that make teachers want to find a new profession.
I stopped at Dollar General (again) today and got all of the kids school supplies. My total for both lists 2nd grade and 5th grade was 45.68. Now that is excluding a backpack. They had everything EXACTLY like the teacher had on the list - right sizes- right quantities. They did have the character backpacks for 5 - 7 dollars, but I had already bought them last week. I thought this might help someone out. I was really pleased.
What was the source of the list which the Times Daily published on the front page of the paper highlighted in shining blue? The TD owes some responsibility for what it publishes so prominately. The Franklin Cty conversation as to kindergarten costs still stands. If what was in the TD is false information then I confess to misinformation.

wh
earthmomma - I believe you are correct in holding TD responsible for what they print. No offense to you, sincerely, but perhaps the mothers you were speaking with in FC were misinformed as well? As I looked at my child's list I "assumed" it would cost much more than it actually did. Some years I have purchased cheap backpacks for $15.00 and some years I have purchased better quality ones, spending 3x as much, which could make my "school start up expenses" higher. Which school in FC are you referring to? I am interested in viewing the list myself. (Some school systems require students to purchase their own workbooks which could also be the case???)
earthmomma, I did some research because my curiosity was really up! I'm not familiar with the names of the schools over there but below are the ones I found on the Franklin County Schools website. I've listed kindergarten school supply lists for each. There's no way that a parent could have spent anywhere near $100 if they plan to attend these schools! The average cost would be $25-35 including a cheap packpack. Some of the lists would not even cost that much. Maybe they were adding in school clothes?

Bless all you persons who gained access to actual lists. If you notice my posting name, you will see why I was so concerned. I know what many many parents or single parents earn, and I know what an earache costs. If you see my obituary in the TD, make sure I'm dead before you come to my estate sale! Other than curiosity about the TD info I am relieved and consider the matter closed.
